Fun discussion
I've seen a 289 '65 stang run 9's.
Guy who owned it said it prolly cost about 4 camaro's worth to do it,
but everyone had a camaro.
One of the primary reasons I put together a 440 Duster was there were so many big block chevelles around at the time.
As for the Ford 390/428 motor .. boat anchors all. The heads just plain sucked.
The Ford 427 was a good motor, if you could actually find one.
Same with the Cleveland ..if you actually found one it cost more then a Hemi to build it.
I ran across people now an then that had a 'built' 428 an such
.. short shifted on 'em cause I was so far ahead it was silly to push the rev limit.
Personally I enjoy workin with any motor that can breathe well and is strong enough to stay together doin it.
Useda feel that a 2-bolt main 396 was a contradiction ..even the 'small port' heads flowed great and begged for 7k without major work.
Big port heads, 4 bolt 427 chebbie with enough carb, compression, and cam will scare the *crap* out of most
..it *likes* 7k+ rpm and gets there in a heartbeat.
I useda tell people I spent more time actually shifting than it took for my '64 Malibu to run thru the gears.
Of course that makes my opinions somewhat biased .. I know a lot of the cars I ran against were decent and the owners considered them fast.
There were nights when people cruised after a day at the drags with numbers on their windows an such ..
.. I useda love poppin their cherries hard
Nowadays .. I am like a kid in a candy store again .. there are just soo many cool toys
..and once again I am runnin into the guys who think they're fast and they just are not.
Ran the vette thru the first 3 gears hard the other day (albeit a bit slower than I useda) after spendin the last month or so gettin used to it ..
..oohh yaa .. it feels *great* to see a fender fade to the rear because he thought he had some on this old guy -evil grin-
ya .. got a 5 year plan in place, we will see how it goes
.. people tellin me the vette will do mid 13's out at Speedworld provided I dont miss a gear .. we will see
