You can slag chevy all you want but I drove a 1969 SS427 impala into which I put a 1968 L88.

I took the closed chamber heads and used them with flat top pistons and found a proper thickness gasket to get mucho quench which allowed me to run any fuel available at the gas station yet still put down enough power to push that sled to 11.5 in the quarter mile...........for 3 years of high school and never needed any service other than spark plugs and points.

We're also getting 1200hp out of Z06 engines for daily drivers.

2) ..they build a killer engine ..then only make enough so they seem 'mythical'
. . unobtainium .. and if you do find one ... it cost more to build than a Hemi.

It was boatloads easier to find and build decent power with any garden variety chebby,
.. even the 440 mopar could be had for not much more than a decent Rat.

Nowadays, the LS motor series are almost like science fiction.
Mileage, power, reliability, AVAILABILITY ..they set the bar pretty high.
May be awhile before you see one in a wreckin yard for 100 bucks, but they are out there :)

recent Craigslist here in Phx had a ZR-1 motor runnin on the stand, guy was askin 8k.
Guy who owned the ZR-1 wanted a blown big block in it, instead. (he went 572 w/8-71 I heard)

if you've ever worked on any of those....you'd have experienced the bolts that break, then require removal of the timing cover.....unless you know the stupidly simple trick to avoid them.

yes it is...considering that the camaro couldn't hold off the #61 mustang for more than a lap or two last week......and needed a full course yellow in order to win its first race in the series.  :devil

Was 'the engine guy' and 'the Holley guy' for a SoCal speedshop '76-'81.
Later was 'the engine guy' for a SoCal auto shop that wanted to be a hi-perf place '86-'93

-shakes head- .. prolly put together a hundred or so motors and spec'd out a few hundred more for owners to build up.

I am all over 'stupid tricks' to make things easier :)
There are some cars/engines I refuse to work on.
289 Ford is one. Guy comes in and wants to know how to make his '65 Mustang faster, I told him to put a Chebby in it.

He put a 454 in his '65 Fastback, single 850 Holley .. 9's in the quarter first time out.
Of course the car was built up to take the heat .. 14" slicks an all.
Wasn't a street car after a few years, but he had a blast tweakin the purists.
Bullit had nothin on him :)

As far as learnin, never went to a school for automotive anything.
Read Car Craft primarily, they had more meat an potato articles that actually taught what worked
than Hot Rod and others, their article on tunnel-ram tuning back in the day is what prompted me to do the deed.

I also invested in some killer books for their time 'How to Hot Rod a big block Chevy' by Peterson Publications was my bible.
Among others. Chilton's manuals helped a ton in my early days.
I always did the research for my projects .. read extensively about A-body mopars before/during/after buildin my 440 Duster.

Chose the Duster over a Dart because the Duster has a shorter wheelbase, among other things.

I understand there are similar books out now for the LS motors -very evil grin-

289 was/is actually a good dependable engine. the water pump thing is its biggest weak point. that, and you need to know how to work the heads to make em breathe. i've seen 9, 10, and 11 second 289's.

 btw.......on ANY 289/302/5.0L ford engine that i'm doing a water pump on.....i take an air chisel to the pump, right at the main bolts....the long ones by the coolant passages. those tend to sieze in the timing cover, thanks to a lack of sealer. break the pump, and you break the pump, and you break the tension, thus allowing the bolts to come out without breaking.

My old Mustang 289 GT ran high 9's, when I was in high school.  My 289 ran with ported HiPo heads, which were tough to find.

Ford has always been weak in head design.  That is why both Chrysler (except the 383 heads) and GM have been able to beat up on Ford.  Ford guys know how to make a Ford engine run with anyone/anything and that usually ends up meaning they replace the heads, or spend some serious dough on port and flow benchwork.

Today a good set of heads can be had from a number of manufacturers.  However, I still maintain I will never run a big block Ford engine.  Chevy and Chrysler big blocks are better engines to start with.

I saw a show on the Shelby Mustang, how they modify it. It was great. They assign two men teams and they take ownership of the product.

The MEL series  (super marauder)  



The 385 series



Now the biggest weakness of the windsor engines was the casting between the water pump and the front of the engine.

If you didn't run good anti-freeze, it would erode quickly.

None of the big block Ford engines (I would have specified the series if any of them were worth a poop).  Well, except for the cammer 427.  I forget about it.  Do not get me wrong.  For a street engine, they would last a long time, but the cost to get them to racing dependability is much higher than anything from Chevy or Chrysler.

You talking about the timing cover being the weakest part.  It would last just fine as long as the coolant was not allowed to stay in the engine so long it would start a galvanic process in the aluminum.
