WW2 Eyes in the sky
« on: July 14, 2011, 12:01:49 AM »
Wouldnt it be cool to have radar planes? Mobile command units for people who want a more strategic role?
They could take off and circle and have maybye 2 or 3 sectors under constant radar untill fighters climb up and kill them even then some of the planes in  WW2 had gunners for it and would be able to at least attempt to fight back. You would be the only one to see all the cons but at least you could call out their exact location and other more strategic options.

Nah dude!  What would be more awesomer is to have recon satellites and AWACS!  Or a AC-130 with some HALO troops carrying LAW rockets so when you drop them on town from 60K they can kill those GV's that are camping the map room and then the AC130 could provide suppression too!

Your reply was unnecessary and trollish. Be a grown up and just politely say, "There is no need for that here sir but thank you for posting".

Sorry, cut67, but WWII airborne radar didn't work like that.  It was very much shorter ranged.  For defensive nightfighters it was used for final target acquisition after being guided close to the target by much more powerful ground based radar.  For offensive nightfighters it enhanced their ability to find their targets as compared to just eyesight, but was very limited due to its narrow view and short range.

According to Wiki,  there was a Wellington version that performed an AWACS function...

"In late 1944, a radar-equipped Wellington was modified for use by the RAF's Fighter Interception Unit as what would now be described as an Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft.[5] It operated at an altitude of some 4,000 ft (1,219 m) over the North Sea to control de Havilland Mosquito fighters intercepting Heinkel He 111 bombers flying from Dutch airbases and carrying out airborne launches of the V-1 flying bomb."

the downside to that is that they would be just flying around with nobody upping.
