Bah.  Going to the movies on Saturday night is part of the American Experience :aok

A home theater is nice and all, but there's no duplicating the "theater experience" of going out to the big screen.  The sights, smells, sounds spark a little nostalgia, plus its an actual "event" to go to, and not just another night on the couch.

Also, while I suppose if you are dragging several kids along it could get very expensive, a movie date these days is a cheap date compared to many other options.  I'm not sure what secluded island you're living on that popcorn is $20, but it's nowhere near that here. 2 tickets to a 2-hour movie, a shared popcorn and 2 drinks will run you about the same as 45 minutes, two dinners and an appetizer at a chain like Ruby Tuesday's or Chile's, or an hour at an arcade.

going to the drive in on saturday night was part of the american experience.

standing in line with a bunch of schmucks, waiting for an over priced ticket, then waiting in line to get to another line for over priced food, then sitting in a theater which most likely will stick to your shoes, cramped in next to other schmucks that you don't know, who inevitably will be annoying in some way, is not my idea of fun .

Captain America was by far the best superhero movie made so far.  Definitely entertaining and I dont go to the movies often enough being a broke college student.

I do say I miss that $6 movie nights in Springfield now that Showcase got bought out by Rave.  With the buying out, the cheap movie nights disappeared which we used as a football team to go out and see a movie.

Will say before this summer I had not gone to the movies in probably 2 years nothing really caught my eye.  Saw Green Lantern and Captain American this summer.

I go to matinees cause Im a cheapskate, and cram snacks in my pockets cause the people at the theater snack counter should be wearing ski masks.

I thought True Grit was a wonderful movie, well worth the price. Im kind of cartoon Hero'd out tho so I'll wait till Conan hits the venues.

I miss the old drive ins and the old time one screen neighborhood theaters.

Sheesh Cap .. sounds like you need to find a decent theater :)

$7ea for wife and I to go see Capt America at AMC theater complex
(and it is a very nicely setup complex), PA was playin Elvis thruout when we came in.

Theater we went to had 469 capacity, prolly 30-40 of us in there.
Wife bein disabled we sit in the handicapped area, uber leg room
and it's like a love-seat with the armrest between us folded up,
easy for her to get in and out of.

Sound system .. well . . they do like it LOUD in there .. and so do I :)
I really liked what they did with the WW2 posters durin the credits .. was a very cool 3d effect.
I still think the comic doods get better every time ..and this was the best yet.
Both DC and Marvel are doing some great entertainment peices now.

Can't wait to see the Team rockin it :)

there was one theater around here that i used to like. it was moderatly clean, and never a big crowd. in fact, there were a couple movies, that my girlfriend and i thought they were playing just for us......

the tickets were always less than $10. the overpriced soda, and snacks weren't as overpriced as in most theaters. we used to go there at least 2x a month.

the loews amc here, showing capt. america is $15. then ya got the overpriced drinks, and over priced snacks.

i can't help it.....there just hasn't been a movie worth going to the theaters for, since that bettie page movie.....in my opinion. and i used to go to the theaters a lot when i was younger.

i REALLY miss the drive ins though.

I want to see that, and Hobo With a Shotgun
If I had a gun with 3 bullets and I was locked in a room with Bin Laden, Hitler, Saddam and Zipp...  I would shoot Zipp 3 times.

Those pictures were merely meant to disprove your assertion that going to a drive-in was part of the American experience, while going to a theater is not.  Movies have been a huge part of the American legacy since they came out, regardless of where you see it.  There's a reason Hollywood is in the States :aok
