Assault Groups
« on: August 17, 2011, 06:19:02 AM »
We have CV groups... why not assault groups? ;)

CVs would never get that close to a contested shore as it was too dangerous of a loss.
Give us Assault Groups with landing craft, DDs, CAs, (maybe later BBs and DBBs) with LVT units (and maybe later LCs) to do the heavy base taking while it is supported by a CV unit 10-30 miles back like they should have been. <S>

18 miles = 8inch range   8.5 miles = lvt range as we have it today . . . i love your idea Bar.  Maybe would improve CV ops from point at a red base and hope for the best cartoon stuff we have generally today.

i would more than love to see this in effect. The sea part of the battle would expand even that much more just by setting up more groups designated to tasks and the strategic gameplay and FUN level would rise. <S>

I mean imagine having to AGs offshore launching LVTs and 8" 16" cannons bombarding an actual shoreline defense while out to sea a CV is holding a couple of flights of F6Fs to take out any air or ground defensive units the LVTs need to pass... it'd be like an AH Normandy :aok

Who wouldnt want to reenact normandy?

Wait, so the AG launches from the CV group when the commander gives the "OK"? Or does it always travel alongside the CV as a seperate "group" that can be controlled by a different person?

Then we run into the problem of people seperating these groups or "hiding" them for whatever reason.

-Assault groups could attach to a CV group at or near a port until within 20-40 miles from an enemy shore. from there the AG can only move within this maximum range from the shoreline. The CV can stay as a separate entity after this and can more anywhere BUT within say 15-25 miles from the shoreline.

-The shoreline minimum is for CVs for all times unless terrain does not permit this rule.
-The shoreline maximum is for all AGs.
-CV groups CANNOT capture bases for any reason.
-AGs CAN capture bases and are the only way to take a base from sea.

-This will allow the AG to attack and do its job while the CV (as long as nobody moves the damn thing away) supports the operation. This will make for more initiative to kill the SBs and press for more air and ground action.

Work on this idea and there may be a good game plan for this <S>

Fear? You bet your life...but that all leaves you as you reach combat. Then there's a sense of great excitement, a thrill you can't duplicate anywhere...it's actually fun. Yes, I think it is the most exciting fun in the world. — Lt. Col. Robert B. "Westy" Westbrook, USAAF 6/<--lol@mod

Great idea...was waiting for the part where he talks of a grand operation where dozens upon dozens of M-18s roll off those LCTs to wreak havoc on enemy beach's everywhere!!! Still a great idea!

You obviously didn't read "Hidding CV's" thread.  CV's are trophies for the well ranked puss nuts that like to take them outta play.  Why?...dunno?  I'd like to see your idea.
They call it "common sense", then why is it so uncommon?

This has been requested many times.  I recall, long ago posting a request for an assault group consisting of a Yamato class BB, Takao class CA or two and four to six Japanese destroyers, though I no longer recall the suggested class.

+1. I would love to steam roller a costal base with my panther fresh off the LSM.
You started this thread and it was obviously about your want and desire in spite of your use of 'we' and Google.

Good idea. CVs are so delicate. This makes perfect sense. +1
