If there had been injuries I would said something terrible happened in front of me. Nobody got hurt just the bike. Man they were pissed cause they had to explain it to their buds.

Being an experienced rider I can tell you - motorcycle crashes aren't cool.  Not by any sense of the imagination.  The guy is EXTREMELY LUCKY to have been able to walk away from that incident.

While his advice of "this is why you wear a helmet" is definitely sound you have to understand that wearing a helmet does not protect you from stupidity and riding beyond your means.  People tend to misunderstand the point of wearing a helmet (or wearing a seatbelt, or having airbags, etc..) as no amount of protection can protect you as well as preventing the accident can.  Virtually all automotive/motorcycle accidents that happen that involve only one person is the result of them either driving too aggressively or not paying attention.

If I had to bet on the survival of an idiot with a helmet versus a responsible rider without one the responsible rider would get my bet hands down.  While a helmet can save your life in the event of an accident it does nothing to protect the rest of your body and definitely does nothing to help prevent the accident in the first place!

Personally I would have had a lot more respect for the guy if his advice was "this is why you pay attention" or "this is why you don't ride like a crazy lunatic" instead of the helmet comment.

As far as you claiming that what you witnessed to be "the coolest thing" well let me tell you something... next time you're in an accident I'll be sure to how cool I thought it was and we'll see how you feel about that.

You definitely have some maturing to do...

He just took the turn to wide, And safety and paying attention is what I do anyways when I drive. I'm a very un-aggressive driver, and I do my duty of looking out so I don't endanger the other drivers. I Have seen some pretty bad teen drivers, I'd like to set myself apart from the crowd.

I stopped riding bikes in NJ after a nice old lady backed out of her driveway right in front of me...on a rainy day!

I ask all the young riders I meet how many times they have dropped their bikes due to crazy auto drivers. If they say never I tell them "You will...oh yes, you will, so be prepared!"

I see people riding with shorts, t-shirts and SANDLES, in NJ of all places.

geez, take a chill man. i've been in an accident where both cars got totaled and i spent time in the er. a silly broad blew a stop sign in a 45mph zone and stopped in the intersection, i didn't have time to avoid hitting her. once i got calmed down enough that the woman wasn't in danger of further injury, i thought about how cool the crash itself must have looked to the people who saw it. the damage to the cars was pretty cool, pushed the entire engine compartment of my car back 5 inches and jammed the doors shut. the corolla the woman was driving was v-shaped and got hung up on a street sign.

The area i live in is kind of rural, but starting to turn into a tourist attraction of a sort, many new buildings and even an apartment complex is being built about 5 minutes down the road. Traffic isn't always really crowded and the only bad drivers I see might appear once a week or 2 weeks. Things are gonna get crazier here soon though...  :(

Moms co-worker got into a nasty accident with a tiny convertable and a SUV, the SUV hit him on the driver side and bent the door in a good 9 inches, Seeing the pictures I thought it was cool, but he won't be able to work for about 9 months. The sadder thing is he's supporting himself, his wife and his parents with his job. Crash was cool to look at but giving it more thought than that can really make you think otherwise in my opinion.

:bhead  you need to learn that crashes arent cool. you just said "cooooool" to a crash when someone got hurt, and if i recall, you said "it was only cool because he got away unhurt". grow up.

there's really nothing cool about seeing a biker go down.

one of our cap cadets lost both of his parents about 2 or so years ago.....when a woman crossed the center line, and whacked them head on on his fathers harley. both parents gone in the blink of en eye. the cadet handled it as well as could be expected, and was lucky to have so many friends within cap......he garnered a LOT of support from us.

just last night, i heard a good friends cousin was killed in upstate new york, also from a person hitting him. supposedly the car driver never saw him, although he was in a group of about 5 or 6 bikes.

Got my shoelace caught in the chain of my old Yamaha YZF while cruising around town when I was 18.  I was doing about 50 mph when the chain pulled my foot and lower leg into the wheel (between the swingarm spars) and sent the bike and myself flipping and sliding down the road.  Lucky for me, my shoe ripped away and I got thrown free (I landed in a hedge after a good bounce off of the curb) just as the bike slammed into a phone pole.  I imagine that if I had stayed attached to the bike, I'd have a prosthetic lower left leg now as the bike was totally destroyed.  The Police Officer that helped move the wreckage (what was left of it) off of the road found my mangled shoe up above the rear wheel...  Luckily, I walked away with some minor road rash and a badly sprained ankle.  I never rode again without tightly tucking in my laces.

Motorcycles are great, but eventually every rider gets to deal with hitting the ground in one way or another.  It's best to accept it and prepare for the inevitable by wearing proper gear.
