I very much doubt that's the reason the news people were smiling.  I think it was because they had just gotten the biggest news story of their lives.  Even if it were what you say, I'd have the same reaction:  "What a bunch of crass pigs."

Same thing with #9 of the pearl shots.
Describes the Jap plane as approaching its objective yet if you look at the plane. Its bomb racks are empty and it look as if its pulling up.

Neither were particularly uncommon in the day. Not particularly uncommon now either to show one thing yet discribe another.

Hmm.  I hadn't thought of that angle.  I'm no longer irritated if it was good news that they were running off to relate.

Provided the shot wasnt staged. Something else which wasnt and still isnt all that uncommon. They probably were running off to relate good news. The Pearl attack just wasnt it.

could have been  running to make the report for this "Japan Asks for More Time"  headline Dated Dec 5, 1941 (scroll back to page 1)
