Stranded in New England?
« on: September 02, 2011, 01:17:41 PM »
Saw INK was on last night, good news there, but others I was wondering, FiLth, I beleive Delirium, smkn, and particularly Max, who is in Woodstock Vermont possibly got hit VERY hard.   :(

Anyway, my best to all impacted by Irene in whatever way. I am in Lebanon NH and we were spared all but our shopping plazas downtown in West Lebanon for the most part. I have friends and acquaintences (sp?) in Central Vermont who did not fare so well, and indeed are quite cut off from society right now.

Also sorry if this is a repost, didn't seem to find anything on it, just Katia (or Kratos, I like the "scary names" idea)

Not much experience with hurricanes, but do take a look online at Vermont presently in the aftermath of a tropical storm.

That's 'cause them, Yankees ain't prepared for real storms like us down here in th' panhandle. *spits tobacco juice*

No but seriously, most of the issue is due to the crap systems and abundant amount of asphalt all over the place. I personally love riding out hurricanes. Hell I went fishing when Katrina hit. Best video footage ever. :P

Hope everyone is alright.

When i hear the name "Kratos"I think of this guy

Trust me, a Hurricane would have to be a c10 to deserve being named after the destruction this guy causes  :uhoh

We lost power for about 24 hours.

When i went to work the morning after the storm,I checked my Electric Companys outage map.

There were only 10 houses in my town that had lost power.

Guess whos' street that was on.

I'm right on the Mass/CT state line close to Southbridge and I never lost power. Oddly enough a very large tree fell on the power lines across the street from me and I lost my cable internet for about 24hrs. The houses on the other side of the street however had no power until yesterday. I still know a few people up here that have no power at this point and they are saying Monday or Tuesday.

I moved up here from FL a year ago and I've been through more hurricanes than I can count in FL and I was totally amazed how many trees went down up here for so little wind. When the tree went over across from me it was max gusts of say 40mph and the storm was just getting started up here.

One thing I noticed up here compared to FL is that the power company doesn't seem to do a very good job at keeping the lines clear. I mean hell a few years ago when the 3 Hurricanes hit Daytona, I was living there and from all 3 storms I lost power for only a day and a half and never lost my internet. The major difference is FPL was good about keeping the lines clear of trees.

I suspect someone will get their butt chewed out about the tree issues on the power lines because IMO that's the main reason so many lost their power. Had the lines been clear prior to this storm I don't think it would of had such big effect, from just a C1.

Big difference in locale also...the power company up there doesn't have to deal with fast growth and high winds like you get all across the south. Most trees in the south grow 9 months out of the year and the power company understands that as well.

Thanks Jeep, good here at the homestead, but lost parts of roads and a few bridges a town north of me. Mother had to evacuate that night, but was allowed back in later that morning. The woman across the street from her had her basement filled with water swamping her new boiler me and a bud had installed a few months back.

this is going to sound very stupid but with my father working for LIPA ( long island power authority) for 30 years I know it to be true.  The trees in florida are WAY different then the ones up here.  the environments are totally different. Florida doesn't have the dense, high tree growth as we do here in the NE. Also Florida codes are more developed for hurricanes then the NE area are. Irene is the second hurricane to hit the NE area since Gloria in 1985 and I believe the last one b4 that was 1939 as apposed to Florida with multiple hurricanes a year
