AH will work with both

but it is recommended to use the analog 3.5mm plug type to reduce resources needed..... USB headphones increases the cpu load

hope this helps

You might be thinking of motherboard sound chips using cpu cycles.

Aces High supports virtually all sound devices however performance may suffer depending on what type of device you use.

Ordered from best to worst:

1> Separate sound card (doing its own processing)
2> On-board sound chip (using the CPU for its processing)
3> USB sound solution

With that being said if you have a modern processor with plenty of free resources then it really shouldn't make much difference any way BUT if you have an older/slower system and/or insist on running a lot of junk in the background then options 2 or 3 could tax your system just enough to cause performance problems.

Recently I "upgraded" from the Turtle Beach AKR8 to the Turtle Beack HPA2 because of a heck of a deal I got on one used from Ebay.  Both use identical 5.1 surround headphones (I actually used my AKR8 headphones with the HPA2 wiring due to the microphone retaining tab being broken on the HPA2) but the AKR8 is USB and the HPA2 connects to the jacks on the back of the computer.

The result?  Actually sound quality seems to be nearly identical either way.  The onboard sound seems to produce a bit more Bass with a 'less tinny' kind of output but both work comparatively well and are very close to each other.  The only REAL difference that I noticed is that before when I would key my mic I would get a split-second stutter - just barely enough to notice.  Now that stutter is gone completely.

The is on a C2D E7400 (2.8GHz slightly overclocked to 3.15GHz on stock cooling) system with 4GB of DDR3 (1066) Ram and onboard Realtek 5.1 surround.

I agree to your order, Tigger, but only AH/gaming wise. The leading local combined computer/HiFi magazine claims that soundwise the USB version would be the best choice. Why is that? Simply because both on-board and separate sound cards are situated inside the case where magnetic fields from all devices are storming and causing interferences. USB headphones have a soundcard of their own outside the computer case, which acts as a Faraday cage keeping electromagnetic disturbances inside.

HiFi wise I've learned that the best choice would be an external self powered sound device (USB DAC) with gold plated connectors for headphones of your choice. Tube powered ones should give extra warmth to the sound...

Price wise I'd rather invest to a decent gaming rig with a shielded on-board audio device with good headphones than to a $ 4000 (four thousand) golden ear sound box.

It's all bunk if you ask me.  Someone who claims to be able to notice the difference in sound quality between a golden box sound device and a quality sound card would be the same person who claims to be able to distinguish the difference in taste between a $1000 glass of wine and a $100 glass of wine.  I don't buy it and the difference in quality (if it even does exist) would be so minute that it would hardly be worth the expense.

Totally agree. But there are people who claim to notice the difference and are ready to pay for it. And then they listen to Justin Bieber or some other squeaker... And drink their 1k wine from a certain brand glass which leads the liquid to the right spot and at a perfect angle to their sophisticated tastebuds... Personally, I'd like to try to find the difference between a $100 and $1000 glasses of wine, on someone else's expense of course. My budget doesn't allow me to compare even $10 and $100 bottles...

My daughter bought a Turtle Beach headset.  Sent it back for warranty service.  Took weeks to get a response.  They never contacted her.  She talked to them repeatedly.  Finally, after three promised shipping dates had passed they sent her a replacement.

I've never used Turtle Beaches on the computer, however my xbox headset is turtle beaches. (X12's), which you can hook up to a computer I just haven't tried it yet as I already have a computer headset anyway. I've had no problems with mine at all, however I haven't had to send them for repairs or anything.
