might have been that, but i can swear it was about light reflecting from the atmosphere.

There is some visually reflective property to the atmosphere, like when you can see the moon during the day. However northern lights are a completely different phenomenon.

I captured this pics last evening driving north on a dark section of Hwy 287,around 4500 ft elevation, in SE of Colorado. I've seen aurora many times driving through Canada, but always green not red, and never at this latitude (38.5N).
