We call them "Mercury Mistakes" and for good reason!  Those things (along with the Contour) were plagued with electrical problems.  I do have to agree though.. that 2.5 makes them quick and fun to drive ESPECIALLY the SVT.  Kind of reminds me of the Ford Tempo with the 3.0 in it!

The SVT Engine for the Contour won the Ward's 10 Best Engines every year they made them.    The other engines, yes, they were junk.

ya know? i never actally saw a tempo with the 3 liter, although i've heard about em.

yea, one of my small fleet customers uses older cars. they just bought a mistake about 3 months ago. the owner of the company himself brought the car to me when they picked it up, for the fluids to get flushed out, as it had been setting for a time before they bought it. when he got out of the car, i said "ooohhhh.....a mercury mistake!!". he asked me why i called them that. i told him that i've never known an owner of one of these or a contour to not have constant problems. he told me that one of the three contours they used to have wasn't problematic so he took a chance.

so far, it's had 4 electrical problems, and a broken windshield wiper transmission. he brought me his personal car the other day, and while talking, he told me he knows why we call em mistakes now.

Valves. I scratch my head every time I see a 16v or 24v badge these days. It was new on cars back in the '80s, but now doesn't almost every car engine have four valves per cylinder?

The engine in the SVT is definitely a good engine.  It's the rest of the car that is extremely problematic.

Typical dodge truck owner.
If I had a gun with 3 bullets and I was locked in a room with Bin Laden, Hitler, Saddam and Zipp...  I would shoot Zipp 3 times.
