So only rated pilots should have an opinion here? Anyone else is not to be believed.

OK.

i haven't a clue. when i get home, i'll look and see what my settings are.

but if you're going north, and see a dot out there, with no relative movement, he's either going away, or coming at you. if he's heading east or west, there will be relative movement, which i suspect even low end computers would show.

this being said......for arenas like the ava.......no icons should be the norm. they should be going back to that, but i suspect they won't. in the mains? i think it's a bad idea, simply due to the fact that you can fight anything while flying anything.
No, they shouldn't.  If they do the guy with the higher resolution has an advantage simply due to being better able to see what his opponent is doing.  Icons don't entirely eliminate that, but they do help level the playing field.

Remember, it is a game.

Considering the prizes of the current hardware like 24" lcd monitors today, making hardware as some kind of issue is rather silly.

Has anyone even considered that during the war, each side had it's own planes.  How am i supposed to distinguish between a nit P-51 and a bishop or rook P-51?
If I had a gun with 3 bullets and I was locked in a room with Bin Laden, Hitler, Saddam and Zipp...  I would shoot Zipp 3 times.

i know, and i treat it as such.......

but if you're flying on a computer that can't show a single dot moving across the screen, chances are good that that machine won't even get into the game with more than a 5fps rate.

i'm not trying to be sarcastic.......

One of the biggest reasons I won't fly in certain FSOs and AvA set ups are the lack of icons. I remember one FSO in particular, no icons were available under a certain altitude so I stayed just under and scored many kills on unsuspecting Spitfires. Lets face it, it brings the game out of the pure dogfighting element and turns it into a 'Wheres Waldo' environment. Do icons take away some of the immersion? Yes, but until something better is available, no computer can recreate the MKI eyeball in resolution.

Yep, I'm awaiting another nasty PM from a AvA staffer for posting the picture.  :devil

whatcha gotta do, is get in reeeeeaaaallllllll close. if they're picking their nose, and eating it, they're bish. if they're flying at about 30k they're knight. if they're picking their nose, and flipping it at the instruments, they're rooks.  :devil

No nasty PM Delirium.  Just want to clarify.  The AVA standard icon setting is 3.0k.  Not NO Icons.

im pretty sure someone has already suggested this but what if a person with his icons turned off, enemy planes wont see his icon either. In order to stop pilots abusing this, u must have it on or off before the sortie starts. Its kinda like the tracers option.

I guy with no icon among people with icon would be like a shadow so for him it would be easy to just pick and run.   such a stupid way to say i want to make it easier for me to pick and nobody would know.  this isnt gonna happen, hitech can smell bs way faster then we can.

Good question.

I often run into this when I buff hunt over enemy strats because nobody is hitting our country.

I wonder if icons could be the country color?

Currently it is hard for me to afford $15/month.  In addition, my computer would not be happy at 1920x1080 (the resolution of cheap, 24" screens) and even then the guy with the 2560x1600 resolution would still have an advantage.
