it means you probably have a crap load of stuff running in the background. Hit control, alt, delete and then select task manager. Click the processes tab at the top. in the lower left corner it will tell you how many processes you have running. The lower the number the better. If you have too many running and your computer can't keep up, it will "forget" to color icons as well as many other little problems.
