Don't know if I'm resurecting an old topic ? But ... With the apparent interest in broadening the strategic influence on gameplay and providing alternative targets ... How about expanding the supply system (generously) with Truck Convoys, Supply Trains, and Merchant Shipping ? These could ALL be included as supply factors and I'd (?) like to see them effect a base's -HARDNESS-. Make it tougher for a HORDE to take a well supplied base. Interdicting supply routes would then have value. And !!! there should be a RANDOM factor involved in the schedule. (just to frustrate those stopwatchers).
ONE TRAIN, that spends a lot of time far from the front is of questionable? value. The Roads, Track Layout, and Nautical Navigation system are already present (AFAIK?), as is a (crude?) supply effect. I'm not sure how hard this would be to implement? But it SEEMS like it might be easy.
HUNTING down Convoys and Attacking Trains was a Common "rhubarb" mission during the push across France and into Germany, tasked mostly to P47s and P51s, it's one of the main reasons those planes have rockets ... It doesn't require a lot of specific target knowledge or planning, it's low level so there isn't any, "let's have a beer while the plane climbs" boredom involved. Might be a real good way for Noobs to start learning the game. The Merchant Shipping would add targets for PT boats and ? MAYBE justify adding the PBY too?
