You must take care of ALL parentheses first. Then do the basic stuff, so 1+2 = 3. 2(3) = 6. 6/6 = 1

Forgot who said this while trying to take a base, but the quote goes like this. "I cant help you with ack, Im not in attack mode" This is with only 2 ack up in the town while troops were there, waiting. The rest of the town was down.

math......hate the stuff

math is a religion created by man to block in your mind and not allow it to expand to new idea's

like when you go to school and sit in rows......when you line up 2by2....ect ect

everything is about numbers..... it suppresses the side of your brain that is for imagination and free thought.

2(3) is not a parenthesis operation, it's just multiplication.  You are distributing.

@ink, there are topics in math that require extraordinary imaginative abilities to get comfortable with, not to mention all the kids driven by their imaginations after seeing the moon landings or some episodes of star trek to become engineers and change the world.

I was being a bit "tongue in cheek"   but
in reality a structured thought process does inhibit the freethinking imagination takes.

one side of the brain processes differently then the other side,  the side that does art and imagination(if I remember correctly its the right side) is not the side that does math and structured problems.

nothing in math could be considered "imaginative"

I would be interested in hearing how you came up with that :aok

I just plug the formula into excel and let it do the work.  Frees my brain up for pondering the mysteries of the cosmos. Or killing it with beer.

If you take math to merely be 1+2 or think mathematicians are some kind of walking calculators you'd be right, but they aren't.  Tell me it doesn't take imagination to picture in your head a counter example to the converse of the mean value theorem.  Proofs take a large amount of imagination and creative thinking.  Most math isn't as simple as being given an equation and solving it using simple algebra, that's only what most people ever learn or have to use.  Calculus is taught as plug and chug in high school even, when there is a great deal more to it.

"Our imagination is stretched to the utmost, not, as in fiction, to imagine things which are not really there, but just to comprehend those things which are there" - Feynman

Math requires the thorough understanding of many concepts and identities in order to prove things, and you won't thoroughly understand them if you can't imagine them in their entirety, probing for weak points and searching for the bits that are vital to functionality.

Many times it's useful to approach difficult problems by imagining the graph first.  Or try to imagine the ridiculous multidimensional space you're working in :).
