Why on Earth do you have your computer on for days? Do you run a server or something, maybe seeding torrents? Are you and your wife and kids working/going to school in shifts so someone is always using it? Or do you own a power plant, getting your electricity on paying customers' cost?

Yes.

Not helpful but I get the message. :aok

Let me ask you guys this:

If I have disabled some things in msconfig lately, could that be causing the leak in the registry?  I have disabled stuff that isn't particularly helpful but since each one of those services or .exe's have associated entries in the system registry maybe that could be the source.

Last night it went from 10657 on reboot to 110k in an hour...no malware and no viruses.  It's getting worse...

You can disable all no-Windows things on the Startup tab without causing problems to gameplay, vice versa. Disabling your antivirus may have undesired effects, though. Fiddling with the other tabs might have more side-effects. On the Services tab hiding Microsofts services may help sorting out those that could affect gaming.

And really, without trying to be the annoying wiseguy, if your "yes" meant all those things I mentioned, it is most certain that there are open handles left from the applications they have used. Thus a reboot every now and then is not to be avoided. Heck, I seem to benefit from a reboot before AH even after letting my daughter spend her hour using Messenger and Deviant Art alongside of some web comics!

But, if I understand right, if you lose performance after a reboot during only playing AH, it sounds as if there really is something using your resources fast. If you checked for malware only in Windows, it could be possible that you have a rootkit or MBR virus which hide themselves very effectively. Download and run some Linux based antivirus program. I like F-Secure's rescue CD, because they have quite a good rootkit finder. Running ComboFix could also help in finding effectively hidden malware. And ProcessExplorer, which I recommended earlier, is of good help trying to find out what's running under the name svchost or any other service.

I lose performance when the computer sits there at idle with nothing open.  Available memory goes down in the period of about an hour

If I had a problem like that I'd quote the Alien movie: Nuke it from orbit :)

Ok...one problem was Intel's overclocking software.  I never use it so I uninstalled it and dropped 6 processes and the drain has slowed a ton.  It looks like each process in the list is growing a little each time I look at the chart.  Im going to check the DIMM settings in the bios now.

Reset the DIMM's to their default settings (auto).  I had them on 7-8-7-20 which also reset the voltage to auto.  We'll see...

Fixed...it was the Intel overclocking software...ver 2.1 has a memory bug in it when used with ASUS Sabertooth X58 MB's.  That is why they ship 2.0 instead of the later version.  I updated it two weeks ago and since I don't overclock...its been torpedo'd.

Thanks for you help fellas...I learned a ton about this.
