Time for a new book

During the last round I ordered The Big Show, Cracker, War As I Knew It, and Last Stand Of The Tin Can Sailors. I read them in that order, and am now on the hunt for another book.

This time I'm looking for writing that details ground warfare in Europe or North Africa. I would also like to find a good book written about the exploits of Luftwaffe pilots.

Of course any and all suggestions are appreciated and will be considered.

There's something about Bradley, I don't know what, but I don't like his writing style.

It's strange as hell, but I really didn't like Flags Of Our Fathers.

What did you think of "War as I knew It"? Its been alot of years since I read it. Its kinda a mini book of the second volume of "The Patton Papers."

If you liked that. I would suggest both volumes of the papers. Which contains not only his wartime diaries but personal letters and communication.

Also if your up for a non war book.
"Fatso" by Art Donnovan about his life and life in the NFL during the 40s and 50s

Great book funny as hell too as only Donnovan could tell it

I found the North Africa and Sicilian campaigns were written more like "General George's Travel Guide To The Mediterranean". Not much in the way of substance.

However, once he hit France the book took a great turn. I found it very insightful as to the workings of a rather complex and effective combat leader.

Has anyone read Rommel's book and how does it rate?

I really enjoyed the first two books in the liberation trilogy by Rick Atkinson.

The first book "An Army at Dawn" chronicles Operation Torch and the battle for North Africa, the 2nd "The Day of Battle" covers the battle for Sicily and Italy. The third hasn't been published yet.

I've read Cracker, pretty good book

'Betrayed Skies" Rudolf Braunburg.  A novel, but written by a former 190 pilot.  A totally different look at the airwar from an anonymous German pilot.

"Nanette" Edwards Park.  Still the best fighter pilot book ever.  P-39s in New Guinea 1943

"Serenade to the Big Bird"  Bert Stiles.  Best first person account of the life of a B17 co-pilot.  Written before the war was over as Stiles died on a second tour flying 51s in November 44.  Just re-read it. A very powerful book.

If you liked Hornfischer's "Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors", his other two books would be well worth your while.  "Neptunes Inferno" about the USN off Guadalcanal, and "Ship of Ghosts" about the USS Houston in early 42 and her crew's experiences as POWs following their last battle.
