I think callsigns should be short and easy to pronounce.
Sometimes I don't give check six calls to people because by the time I figure out how to pronounce their name they get shot down.
That's why after a couple of months as a numbers guy (yes, I just randomly punched things in on the number pad
), I always stuck with names that are easily read, typed, and spoken.
Got sick of being told 'hey numbers, just shut up' and 'yo, noob, go change your name'. After I learned the ropes, I also realized how stupid and annoying names like 50593492, or ANQX17 are.
Speaking of such things, I've never understood why so many squadrons feel like having ~~~~~ , ****, ((((, ----, $, or any combination thereof make their names cooler looking. To be honest, and I mean this in the nicest, most inoffensive way possible, I've always felt like it was something a (to steal a line from a movie) retarded gang-banger would come up with.
EDIT: completely unrelated and unimportant, spell check's first suggestion for 'gang-banger' is 'concubinage'
.
