Pilots head position
« on: February 08, 2012, 11:37:28 PM »
I have recently gone to a three monitor display it is 5760 by 1080.  Since I have done this I can only see the top 2/3 of the instrument panel.  I have tried to RE -map the arrow keys and still can't get the view to move far enough back.  The page up or page down controls work fine.  My temporary solution has been to set a view to the hats -swhich so I can see weapon selected or ammo count.  All my settings are at 5760 by 1080.  And in the game my field of view has been auto set to 145°any suggestions on how to get the instrument panel in my field of view?

If you want the same aspect ratio you had before you'd have to set the monitors up in portrait mode instead of landscape.  If you map a button to keypad 8, or just press KP8, you can set your head position for KP8 as an alternate forward view that shows the panel.

Are you saying you can see more of the instrument panel when you are using a single screen?

We really do not have any control over this, per se.  DirectX handles all the direct pixel to screen mappings.

Triple screen aspect ratios can cut the vertical view angle in half assuming a 100 degree view angle on the single monitor and 145 degrees on the triple.

If you set (or let the game set it) the field of view correctly, the vertical view should not change, or change by only a few rows.  You also must make sure the monitor is not auto-switching to another mode or resolution as well.

Before going to the triple monitor I could see more of the instrument panel.  I have mapped a hat switch so I can see the lower instrument panel.  Going too a portrait setup seems to make sense I will have to give it some thought since my displays are pedestal mount and would require adapting.

Do you allow the game to auto set the field of view, or have you tried to set it manually?  If the field of view is too narrow for the actual width of the monitors, the vertical will get cut-off.

The auto setter could be rounding.  Try upping the field of view by a degree and see if that gets back the vertical.

If you set a single monitor to a 145 degree game view angle, the middle 1/3 horizontal section of the monitor shows you what you'll see with a triple monitor. Setting a game view angle of 50 degrees on a single monitor should also show you how much vertical view you'll lose. With a triple monitor in landscape mode there is no way to compensate for the vertical view loss.

Unless you have an IPS panel you may find that your view angles for the monitors are too narrow to work well for portrait mode.

You are quoting numbers which may or may not be right for the screen configuration.

If you use the auto-field of view, you will not lose any vertical, at all as long as the resolution is set correctly for the multi-monitor configuration.

I just watched HiTech do a dynamic window size change and it did not lose a single pixel in the vertical going from 4:3 to 48:10 aspect ratios.

If you are losing vertical, then your field of view is not set correctly, and that is why the auto-field of view option exists.

I see your point Skuzzy but the 16:9 single monitor default view angle is not 1/3 of 145.

I have gone to the catalyst control center in my computer and set it at 5760 by 1080.  On the game video settings I have selected auto set, it recognizes 5760 by 1080 and gives me a field of view of 145°.  I have tried a field of view of less than 145°but it only seems to move the closer to the instrument panel.

You can't increase the vertical view angle, you just have to get used to looking up and down more.

You'll want to try the bezel compensation. It looks more natural.

Setting it less than the auto-set option will result in clipping the vertical.  Increasing the field of view results in more of the vertical showing.

EDIT: Ok, I just realized the game sets an arbitrary limit of 145 degrees as the maximum.  I'll make a bug report to HiTech for that becuase 145 is not enough for a 16:9 aspect ratio 3 screen system.

So for the time being this is the best I can do.  With more people going to a three monitor display do you expect the 145°setting to change in the near future?
