This person/dentist was in the room with your child all alone with no parent supervision??

Sorry for the questions but it seems now that we are missing some of the story. Obviously you want input since you posted here on the boards.

What I understand so far is your wife took your small child to a dentist and he did a bunch of work without your wife's authorization or knowledge.

Is this correct?

That does sounds strange. I don't have experince with US dentistry, but generally, capping primary (milk) teeth isn't something that is normal praxis over here. Using pre-fabricated steel crowns is also very little used. Like you said a lot of tooth have to be grinded down to make them go on, and unless the cavity was very big that seems like a big overkill.

Not really.

The story, "My kid went to the Dentist for a chipped tooth and came home with a silver grill" demands scrutiny.

Not because we don't believe the O.P., but because we are wondering why/how it could happen.

Yep, I'm a Father of two and they have had many a dental procedures. None of which resulted in a new set of chrome chompers.

EDIT: I should also mention that I just spent 6K on new teeth for myself. They had to gas and drug the hell out of me in order to grind my teeth into nubs before capping them.

EDIT2: No, I'm not from England. I spent many years living way too hard.  :lol

I'm shocked at what I see.

Number one... Keep calm at home, especially in front of the child.

Number two... Take the child to another dentist for a second opinion.

Number three... Crowbar the chopper for what he did (if warranted).

Take plenty of pics and some video of her trying to hide from the mutilation the dentist did.  You just hit the lottery homersipes.  Contact an attorney.

If you are positive your wife didn't authorize the work I think you need to talk to a lawyer.  If there was insurance involved in all this you might call and talk to someone there, as if the work was unnecessary then they are being defrauded.

I know she didnt say to do THIS, I mean she said the only thing she signed was a release about restraing her in the room. I know if we did go to court all he would say is "she gave me consent" then its her word vs his.  I am going to talk to the tardhobag and other names on monday to find out exactly why what and what was said.  we already have another dentist appointment lined up.  I dont know much about the whole legal thing with his word vs her word, that would be like a verbal contract right?? I dont know but I would LOVE to send my 2" wrench through his face lol.  This whole thing is really getting to me, damage is done cant reverse.  I have looked all this up online and crowns usually take more than 1 visit to put them on he did 8 in less than an hour.  2 top fronts which is why she went(are white by the way), all 4 bottom fronts and 2 bottom molars.
