To 'honor' is a verb commonly used with regard to discounts and coupons, and accounting has quite the vocabulary.  If it had been a hectic day, then she was probably stressed out and didn't realize that it was a hurtful pun.  It's just like someone from here saying "roger" to a question by accident- it's the force of habit, not malice, that causes such behaviors.  Did he even tell her that she hurt his feelings?  Then we'd know whether it was just an accident (if so, then it was a very funny accident- admit it) or if she did it on purpose.  Thus, let us not judge lest we be judged ourselves.

I feel it is rude just as he does. Albeit, I probably dont feel it as personally rude as I don't wear a uniform, but the fact that the cashier pretty well segregated the currently uniformed from the previous and/or future is deffinitly rude.

There are times when I ask for a military discount and times when I do not.  Unfortunately, more times then not, the military discount ends up costing more then what the sale price would be.  In regards to honoring the military; I find the general populace is overwhelmingly supportive of us. 

It is very hard not to create a political post when talking about the military because everything we do has political undercurrents.  What bothers me the most is the amount of carelessness the government takes with its vets.  We have been fighting this war for over 10 years now.  We put our bodies through terrible things, we pound energy drinks because of the necessity to stay awake, we honor the checks we wrote to the government but it would seem we are nothing more than a means to an end.  There has been too much chatter about taking away basic benefits (healthcare, retirement, ect...) after we have used up our bodies in defense of our country. 

There are too many people I know who have fuzed backs, blown knees, horrible mental health issues for a couple examples.  Why take away the foundations of what was a good baseline in a military career.  How am I going to afford Tri-Care for life when it takes my entire retirement pay to cover the premium?

I am sorry for hijacking this thread, some of the stuff I have been reading and seeing first hand are very much worrisome to me.

Vets band together and stay organized. I respect and appreciate the efforts and the sacrifices that current and past servicemen have done. I struggle saying this without sounding callous, but that being said, regardless of country, time or place, all to often to many rich and powerful people you are a pawn, and if you don't watch out, as soon as your 'usefulness' runs out, they'll throw you to the curb if they can get away with it. It's vital that  you band together to get a 'fair' deal, as after your service is over you are nothing more to them than an expense on a balance sheet. Its easy to be manipulated by patriotism or whatever else, but the game is as old as civilization itself.

I have known I was a pawn to the power brokers long ago. I stayed in the military for the Soldiers I have served with and for. The college money was nice when I first joined but the reality od the situation is I love the job. I like taking care of my troops, I like watching the light turn on when they realize the same things I did long ago. In my ywenty years of service, I have watched my Soldiers grow, mature and become fine leaders. My regret is our loss of benefits which have always been there. I remember joking under the Clinton cut backs about them taking back the pay raise, I am now worried they actually will. This is not a slam on the Dems or Repubs. Theu are both guilty. They sure have a great retirement plan.

No, I guess all it means is simply that store policy gives veterans discounts rather than people currently serving

I never ask for a military discount, and I don't try to make it obvious that I'm in the military. No bumper stickers, Army t-shirts, or a high-and-tight. To me that's just a backwards attempt to get people to offer you discounts and favors.* I already get a paycheck, anything more should be offered, not asked for. I don't like making people feel obligated to give me special treatment.

*(Also you just make yourself a target. Our enemies are here and actively tracking us and you're being outsmarted by them if you advertise your service. Stay armed and undercover, don't be the first one taken out when they strike again and you might be able to make a difference.)

There are already a lot of vets out there who've been screwed over by the system.   I have a buddy who came back with PTSD who's been fighting for 6 years to get any sort of VE benefits out of this because the US Army deamed it a "Pre-existing Condition" and gave him a general discharge for mental issues.  He's had to go to our local congressperson a few times to get any support because he's being stonewalled by the VA.  Unfortunately, I've read many disturbing articles where this practice is actually being ordered by  this and the previous administration to keep numbers artificially low on the sacrifices our soldiers are making in the GWOT.  There is now talk of taking away more benefits as the Government wants to 'trim it's budget'.  They aren't saying squat about their own retirement or health plans...  or looking at maybe cutting down on some of the Military bases we have in countries we have no reason.

The military is the biggest government expense second only to entitlements. The government will cut the biggest thing they can and they can't cut entitlements, so veterans are first on the chopping block. And the percentage of voters that are in or were in the military is in the single digits, AFIK. What're they gonna' do if their representatives screw them? Vote them out? Good luck.

Well, as they say, all or nothing.  And I understand IHOP not being able to afford a 10% discount too, you're better off going to Bobby's and paying a dollar more anyways (and at least their coffee is drinkable too).

To segregate though... pick and choose as you will... well, implies that their s!@# don't stink, or that they feel some who wear the uniform are different than another... and that right there, especialy inregards to the military, is extremely ignorant of them.

I think Penguin and a few others made a good point about the context in which the word "honor" was used in this situation.

It proved to me how quickly I jumped to a conclusion ( I was pissed!) and how biased I am.
