Sent a blowgun and a slingshot to my brother during his first deployment (apparently there were a lot of birds on his FOB), my dad would burn current tv shows onto dvdr disks and send those over as well.  A good question to ask him once he is there is "what is something that you don't personaly want but could be easily traded for something you do?" and send lots of that item.  My brother doesn't like beef jerky but would ask us to send it so he could trade it away for other stuff. If there is a food or drink that he likes that is only local to the area he grew up in, send that if you can.  Another thing my family did was to send audio tapes of us talking about our week/month, and the goofy stuff that happened to us. of course it was a one way conversation, but he said it helped him feel more connected to home while he was away.
The real problem is anyone should feel like they can come to this forum and make a wish without being treated in a derogatory manner.  The only discussion should be centered around whether it would work, or how it would work and so on always in a respectful manner.

A buddy of mine just left this past Sunday with the 143rd Airborne Regiment (Texas National Guard) for Afghanistan and I'm about to start sending him packages. He wants me to send him dip and things like that, but another friend said that I wouldn't be able to send him dip. So I was just curious if anyone here would know and if not, what should I send him?

Thanks

I have to ask. Did he bring the slingshot on patrol?

He said he wouldn't leave the FOB without it.

You can never send them enough beef jerky - either one package or the whole cow will do (for like maybe a week).

BABY WIPES!  You will be as good as God himself if you send baby wipes.

Though I have no experience with military service whatsoever, I've hiked ever since I was little, and I can imagine that he'd want Icy Hot patches and cream along with hydrogen peroxide, gauze, disinfecting wipes, cotton balls, foot deodorant, Advil, thermal underwear (boxers, shirts, leggings), supportive braces, and any piece of gear that will fit him better than the stuff he has.  Focus on things that will keep him comfortable before, during, and after his long walks in the desert.  Even the little things can get to you after a while, so tell him that there's nothing too small to fix.  Also consider getting him a red head-mounted flashlight, it will allow him to read while he walks without harming his night vision or revealing his position.

It will also allow him to get his bellybutton shot off or step on a booby trap because he's not paying attention.

Yeah, I just wasn't too sure if I wasn't allowed to send certain things. I talked to him on the phone today. He called me right after he woke up and said that he hasn't gone out to his FOB just yet. If you PM me, I can send you his address cause he'd sure like to hear from a lot of his friends here.
No one knows what the future may bring.

Some good ideas penguin but the aide station is loaded with the otc stuff. Oreos were always a hit. Send extra stuff, no matter the rank we always gave stuff around. In winter you can send chocolate. Books are good for the down time. Baby wipes are gold!!!! Record tv shows WITH comercials, especially the super bowl. AFN comercials are horrible. War movies go over well as do video games. It is funny some of the stuff we crave over there.

I meant to say that he could read things like signposts and maps, not books.  Besides stepping on booby-traps, he'd be stubbing his toes and twisting his ankles all the time because he missed a rock, not to mention accidentally wandering off from the patrol.  I didn't intend to suggest that he read while he walks.

Would baklavas help?  Those nights must sure be chilly.

They have those things covered. They have for years.
