Your eyes are weird.  I see an ovalish field of view.

The reason binoculars produce a circle is because each eye is seeing through a circular lens.  The brain does not overlap them to produce a shaped view.  Seriously, go use a pair of binoculars.

Lol I was trying to be extremely sarcastic and I guess you didn't pick up on that.  I agree with you and was trying to poke a little fun at the other people who didn't think you were right.

I've been torn with this idea for a while, in one way I'd like to see more realism being that if a commander is in a commanders view he's using binoculars to view outside the tank, for any reason he's strafed and killed you are stuck in the gunners position.

That being said I have to go back to balancing the arcade and realism for the sake of making things enjoyable and the learning curve not so steep to new players, however just like real commanders of tanks - if you are in a "green area" then you can unbutton and view with binoculars, however in a hot zone - you'd be lucky we don't have the million other things that killed tank commanders that were unbuttoned (snipers, mortars for example).

To make it simple - if you are in a commanders position and get strafed, you have the chance of having him killed, if you are in the gunners position you'd be buttoned up.

Just more fuel for thoughts, +1 on the idea, its a VERY good idea.

I like that idea.

I say we use the overlaping view just so noobs can kind of figure out they are viewing things through binoculars. I mean if they zoom, and just a black circle apears, they'll go "what the hell? I'm in the gunner possition again".

And +1 butcher.

Cool and simple idea!

If commander is dead, commander view should be disabled too...
The hatch open/close feature is also cool.

This certainly is a game play vs historical accuracy issue, no doubt.  No TC in their right mind would be protruding through the top hatch like an erection in spandex if an enemy airplane were lining up for a strafing run regardless if it had an MG for AA defense or not.  Likewise, the TC isnt going to be "unbuttoned" if their tank is receiving enemy tank fire.  Perhaps if the enemy tank is 2000 yards or further out, but even then not for long.  So once the TC "buttons up", the field of view is so drastically restricted the game play if negatively effected.

I think it is the best we can expect for the time being and I'm just fine with that, the current set up is a good balance.  I'm just happy has heck to have historically accurate gun sights, that alone was a HUGE jump in the realm of realism.   :aok

Restricting field of commander's view to a circle, or killing the commander if he sticks his head out of the cupola may seem to be more "realistic" taken by itself, but this is a game.  Making it harder to see/survive in a GV would would be bad, in my opinion.  It's hard enough to survive as it is.

Well the field of view would only be restricted when you zoom in.

This is why I said play balance would be an issue, if you put the game to realistic then new players would be overwhelmed and left in the dust trying to figure things out. In this fairness, Tank Commanders should not get zoom while we stick to a balance of arcade and realism. Right now the average non-perk tank (under 1 perk) really can't do squad at 2k anyway to need a zoom, you should see quite fine up to there, if not look harder.

Thus being said, if you REALLY need zoom, time to start cranking out perk tanks, but zoom will be useless if people fail to understand why they are perked and the best tactics to use for them.

Well the field of view would only be restricted when you zoom in.

It already is restricted when you zoom in.  You get more magnification, and less field of view, since your monitor is of a fixed size.  Furthermore, the zoom mechanism is a basic feature of the game (both AC and GVs), I think in part, to compensate for limited monitor resolution.
