Try booting in safe mode and then scan. Then upgrade to Firefox.

His internet explorer is trying to go to a page whilst he's playing? That would indicate he's infected by something or other, or a process is kicking off directing IE somewhere. Suggest going into safe mode with networking, scanning with malware bytes, free and can be found here http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free.

Also ensure you are in safe mode with networking before scanning with your av (if you have none, suggest microsoft security essentials - suggested as its free, has a small footprint, and is reasonably effective). Can be found here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials

Also, agree with the firefox suggestion, you can import your current favourites so you dont lose anything etc. Add an adware blocker, and your good to go.

You can also use chrome, but be aware google has changed their privacy policy, and track everything pretty much.
