Random Town Generation
« on: March 11, 2012, 09:52:42 PM »
Basically... I would like to see 3 or 4 different town layouts.  The town layout for each base would be determined when the map loads up into the arena on the server side.

So instead of the same town... at every base... every time... we would see the 3 or 4 different towns on every map, and at every base.  The "town" gets placed on the map by the map designer.  The town is the same area no matter where it is.  So as long as the different towns are all the same area, then there should be no issue with placement.

Example:

Map XYZ (on monday)

A1 - Town type 1
A2 - Town type 2
A3 - Town type 3
A4 - Town type 4

Map XYZ ( next time map loads up in the rotation)

A1 - Town type 3
A2 - Town type 4
A3 - Town type 1
A4 - Town type 2

I think it would add some flavor, and a new level of difficulty to the game overall.  Same could be done with bases and task groups as well.

Sounds great.

But is it safe to say that nothing is randomized on these maps???  Everything is coded and "go" is pressed.

Nothing is random now...  What I am asking for is that when the terrain is loaded up into the arena, each town type gets determined randomly.  In essence, it makes every map a little bit different each time it is played.

LOL... I dont care... ask HiTech.  :aok

It was just an idea I had... thought it worth posting.  I have no delusions that it will ever get implemented.

Meh .... something harder to program that's a whim but not a necessity getting '+1s?'

My wish would be a wishlist that didn't resemble a 'what-if thinktank' that has more tank than think.

Wish for something more realistic ... like maybe nukes for the B-29 (Arlo says rather tongue-in-cheek).  ;)

Sounds more like you want a "solutions discussion forum" so the community can think about and try to come up with solutions to what's in the wishlist.  ;)

It will need some work but sounds cool, good idea.

Not so much. The vast majority of the community consists of players and not programmers (though some may also be, to some degree) and certainly not programmers that are familiar with the specific coding of Aces High II. On those rare occasions that I form a wish that may possibly take a great deal of effort to code (I replace HT's and Pyro's experience with my presumptive logic), I take into consideration the possibility that the coding, itself, may be impractical, then I also take into consideration that the wish may be inconsequential. Both of those possibilities bear impact on whether the wish, itself, is a waste of time on both my and their part.

So now we have a case in point.

'I wish, I wish upon a star that HTC maps (statically created with bases in place) would mystically become dynamic and base placement would randomize each time the map is cycled."

Would it be cool? Mmmmyeah.

Is it something that could be coded in two weeks? Heh.

Is it something that's so revolutionary that it'll bring in more players/revenue? Eh.

Is it worth more than a PT boat with wings? Errrr .....

Can I wish for something better? Probably. Even a new B-25 variant would fit the bill.

Is '+1' easy to type without much thought involved? I'd say that's a proven.

 :D

But yeah, it never hurts to ask and weirder stuff's been asked for.

Maybe what I'd like to see is a separate 'serious development think tank' sans the unicorns and wizard wishes dry erase board that this one has become.

I dont think I was asking for anything mystical... I realize it would not be as simple as just adding new town types.  I also wasnt asking for the placement of towns and bases to change... just the layout within the current footprint.

Would it be cool? Mmmmyeah.

Just looking for something that would add a degree of variety to the map.

Is it something that could be coded in two weeks? Heh.

Never said or thought it would...

Now you are just being silly...  :neener:

You probably can... it was just a thought I had when reading another wish post.  Thought it was worth discussion.  And yeah... the B-25J would be nice too.

Is '+1' easy to type without much thought involved? I'd say that's a proven.

Wasnt looking for "+1s'"... just tossing an idea out for discussion.

But yeah, it never hurts to ask and weirder stuff's been asked for.

I agree...

And yes... there are plenty of things posted in the wish list that are totally undoable, and unneeded.  Is this "needed"?  No, probably not.  Not a bad feature to have though.  IF HTC were to redo and revise their terrain system... it could be incorporated then.  I am sure that the coding alone would be a good deal of work, not to mention the time it would take to make 3 or 4 new town types... and the increased time it would take for a map to load up in the arena due to script execution to generate the random towns would also have to be taken into consideration.  I have done a good bit of coding and scripting for other games... so I am under no delusions that this would be easy, or fast.  Again... just an idea... although I dont think it is "wizard or unicorn" worthy.   :D
