Anyone actually FLY with a "4G Hotspot"?
« on: March 25, 2012, 12:31:04 PM »
<S>Hey gents, I live in the mountains, and high speed internet options are VERY limited. I was wondering if the new AT&T and Verison 4G hotspot gadgets are doable for AH. Do they have the same issue as sattelite?(sending the signal in little bursts, (which render the planes as sorta stop-and-go kinda thing)? Or is it smooth?  :x
You wouldnt believe what Im paying for a 150k connection   I COULD live with the speed of 150k, but the ISP is SO OVERLOADED that there's regular outages and slowdowns...

With Aces High it's not about speed.. it's about latency.  There are many people here with limited options that play just fine using a 56K modem the old fashioned way!  To be perfectly honest that may be your best option as well.

To simplify things internet speed is like how fast you can talk.  Latency (or lag) is the amount of time between when you start talking and when the other person starts to hear what you're saying.  Since all of the rendering is done on each person's computer there really isn't a whole lot of data that needs to be transferred however since the game is played in "Real time" the timing of that data is critical otherwise you run into problems such as warping, "rubber bullets", delayed notifications, and if it gets to be too bad disconnects.  It's not that you are necessarily disconnected from the internet it's that the Lag gets so unpredictable that Aces High simply says "I can't work with this goodbye!"

The problem with wireless internet methods, especially satellite and cell (although cell technology is always improving) is that they tend to have high and inconsistent latency.  This isn't an issue for web browsing but can be problematic with gaming.  I've heard of some people that have almost no issues playing AH through cell internet and I've heard of others that can't even stay connected for any amount of time.  It all varies based on interference, signal strength, and cell tower congestion.  Anytime any part of your network and/or internet connection is wireless all bets are off.

Typically speaking here is the list of internet access types ranging from lowest (good) to highest (bad/inconsistent) latency:

-Wired High Speed Internet (DSL/CABLE/FIOS) (Low Latency, Very Consistent)
-WIFI ISP Providers (Typically low Latency but inconsistent)
-56K Dial Up (Middle Latency, Very Consistent)
-4G Cell Internet (Middle to High Latency, inconsistent)
-Satellite (Extremely High Latency, somewhat inconsistent)
-3G or older Cell Internet (Middle to High Latency, extremely inconsistent)

I've found with my 4G phone that the 4G works just great--when I have it. Problem is it's inconsistent even if I'm sitting in my living room. One minute I have it and the next it's hunting for the signal again. I live in the middle of the northeast corridor so it's not like there's no civilization near me. I just think the 4G network, while growing, isn't quite as established as the 3G one is. Because of that I've turned off the 4G on my phone if only to save on power (the battery gets drained when hunting.) I use the 3G which is just fine. The 4G I'm finding is just better for streaming video and such which my old eyes won't allow for even on this pretty Razr screen.

As said in posts above. Your connection for gaming isn't all about the speed as much as consistency and latency. You'll do better with a constant but slower connection than a buggy faster one every time.

before you even start make sure you have unlimited plan and not one of them limited to 4gig of data or you will end up paying a lot of money once you go over the data.

Yes! It seems there's a big difference between unlimited and actually unlimited too!

What name did you fly under previously? I believe I remember you being laggy while on your other name.

Still not as bad as that guy from Alaska, he is so laggy he is still fighting the dogfights from yesterday.

DrSpek.  Your talking about when I had Hughes Net.  Thats completely differnt.  It is actually terrible for gaming, I beileve it had a 1 second delay.  Verizon 4G is just fine.

I was forced to fly using my 3G phone and had very few issues and I live in a sketchy area.
