Is it the music or the words?
« on: May 03, 2012, 10:47:53 PM »
NEW POLL

My Wife and I were sitting around when this discussion came up:

I said that I enjoy songs for the lyrics.

She said that she enjoys songs for the music.

So, what is it, lyrics or notes?

It's kind of both for me.  But the first thing I listen to is the music...then the words.

at some point, when freddie starts the vocal improv, in my opinnion, its simply insane, I love it. mainly if I'm using phones, the voices inside my head... everything... I go crazy and have a freaking overdose

 But also, at some point the lyrics makes it all:

 One that does not understand portuguese and just listened to this song would think its some kind of happy song about beaches or whatever, something light.

 But as the lyrics talks about freedom of speech and the fear (it was a dictatorship by that time and this was one of the tortured guys) you see the true meaning of it all and mixed with the light melody it makes you feel kinda powerfull and hopefull!

 So IMO it depends. if the lyrics is to good or the melody is too good but the other is real bad it might ruin everything... but I don't know... cases and cases. some rap songs (I don't know much US rap) of 1990's-2000 have deep lyrics yet with simple melodies. and are just great.

Is it the words or the music?

EDIT: Sorry, that was an awful example as it was meant to deceive the listener.

Please try to listen to this song and tell me what story you hear. Or just tell me how you felt about the music.

Considering I listen to a lot of techno and classical, I have to say I enjoy the music more than the vocals most of the time.

Creeping death, just like when I was a child and loved ACDC, I really liked the music!  :rock couldn't

now that I've researched the lyrics (couldn't understand much during the video due to all the rythim distracting my head) I like it too.

but i've got to say tho, by the end the melody was a bit to much. but then its a personal taste thing so I don't know what's the answer to that main question, I guess it depends on personal things! for me. I like both, me and my GF love something that we can dance to, like old US funky music yeah!  :D

Creeping Death isn't asking a question, it's telling a story.

@Banshee7 I hear ya.

@Kilo2 Yup

@F22 You're disqualified. Unless you re-qualify yourself by having an opinion.

@Raphael Creeping Death isn't a question. Listen to the words and tell me what you think the story is about.

For the rest of you posers, what is it, notes or lyrics?

Music is heavily favored at the moment.   :headscratch:

Really? Does nobody else listen to the words?

Any song.

It really depends on the genere of music. Country is all about the lyrics whether its a play on words,or a real life story.With some really good playing thrown in occasionally. Rock lyrics go all over the place. Now my being a weekend pro musician,I listen to everything in a song. Lyrics, groove,harmonies,etc. So I don't really like a song for just the words or music. But,to each his own I guess.

Rock lyrics go all over the place.

Stop right there.

Country songs run the gambit from killing spouses to drinking receptacles. Don't generalize rock music as being scatter-brained.

So, what's it gonna be? Poop or get off the pot music boy. Do you like music for the lyrics or the beat?
