we were working on a log cabin and I walked out the front door and saw something on the porch, so I walked over and realized it was a hummingbird.  I thought it was dead so I picked it up and realized it was still alive, but in a daze.  I brought it over to my truck and it took off from my hand and flew down by the windshield, I caught it again and a couple coworkers came over as it flew out the window and the thing came back, landed on the mirror.  Another guy held it for a few minutes and it took off and perched in a tree over the trucks for a good 30 minutes.  I figure it ran into a window and knocked itself out or something.

Yes very cool to be so close to 1 like that. :aok

It probably did hit a window although as I understand it they go into a hibernation like state over night because their metabolism is so high they can literally starve over night.

Really cool that you got pix to prove it!

yeah I had one of those  today.  I was attacked by a swarm of bees when I stepped out of the office at work.  it scared the crap out of me as i am allergic to bee stings.  lucky for me they were just looking for a place to build the nest so they couldnt sting.  I did scream, not like a little girl, but more like a young woman  :rofl.

We have some big windows facing the woods, the windows have anti-bird strike decals on them but every once in a while a bird will still smack into them.  Several times now my wife has been successful in reviving the birds.   She picks it up and gently massages it for a few minutes and keeps it warm.   It also might not hurt that she keeps the dogs and cat off it till she's done. :D

Found a few in a greenhouse that got in there and couldnt find their way back out. Little suckers were so worn out they were panting. Shiny green one and a blue one. When they wore themselves out, took them outside and put them on a potted flower pot. Few minutes later they got enough energy and took right off. Didnt have a camera that time

Good job and great story. It looks like an Rufous Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus). However, the little guy may die if it hit the window. Their skulls are so thin that they die right away or later from head injury or development of brain damage.

Well I had my bird experience this morning. I forgot that I removed the hood off the chimney about a month back. I cleaned it and did not reinstall it. Well this morning I am sitting in my easy chair and one of the dacshunds is paying way too much attention to the fireplace. He is excited and the other dacshund comes running up too. I look inside and between the curtain and glass is a swift. I put the dogs out and open the glass. He is evidently tired. I was able to fairly easily retrieve him. He sat in the palm of my hand.

I brought the dogs back in and stepped outside to see if I could set him on the fence so he could calm down. He would not get off my hand so I held him for maybe 3 or 4 minutes in my open palm. He then took out like a scalded cat. Looked like he was going to be fine.
