Weighty arses give you traction. You don't have to be rich to buy a 911 either, the car has been made for 46 years. There is a huge 'dip zone' in the prices between the 'classics' and the 'recently made and look at me' models.

Yep the 996 model which is much more reliable than the old aircooled 993 is actually cheaper to buy. Porsche purinists don't consider it a 'proper Porsche' because of its aerodynamic styling. But that thing is a hoot to drive, it didn't have explosive grunt like the Mercedes AMG55 for example but the engine was smooth as butter. And even cruising at 30mph in casual driving you could feel the torque in your back at the slightest touch of the pedal.

I was really impressed. I never imagined a non turboed engine with such a small capacity could deliver so good torque.

I'd call it 'bored to the diesel Jeep while passing one of the 100 000 Russian trucks on the road' thread.

OTOH I am approaching mid-life figures.. hmm..  :rock

No sarcasm or disdain.

You know that I find you to be both intelligent and interesting.

Your post indicated that you had something to do with MrRipley's enjoyment of the Porsche. I was merely wondering if you would spill the beans about being some sort of Euro-car insider.

I agree with Skuzzy's sentiments, there just seems to be something missing with these new 911's.  I will say that the non-turbo versions are a LOT of performance/HP for the money now.  Heck, they will all do 300 km/h, which is pretty impressive for a sub 4 liter motor with no super/turbo charging systems.  But, for 100k, I'll take the wife's car (Nissan GT-R) any day.  If you're looking for an 80 to 100K import, it is by far and away the best bang for the buck.

The race between Ford and Chevrolet in the Camaro/Mustang segment is so incredible now, I think anyone looking for a sports car is crazy not to buy one or the other.  The 2011 Shelby we bought last year left enough money for a 50$k MasterCraft Boat WITH the Mustang, and still left change compared to buying JUST a base model 911 Porsche.

The 80's and 90's 911 Turbo's are always a real blast to drive, a true enthusiasts car, also one that can kill you very quickly with that crazy back end in the corners, no matter how good of a driver you might be.  I think that's always been part of the attraction...having the angel of death sitting in the passenger seat saying "oh..OH OH watch that throttle..ha ha you almost lost it there..woah look out for this turn" when you're blasting down a nice stretch of back roads.

There were some issues with the early 996 engines that you should research before you buy. All sorted now I hear. Of course you have the four valve head which is handy.

The real asset of this engine is that it is one of only a small number of formats which have perfect primary and secondary balance. Almost has a positive net torque output too.

Buy the Elford book  :old:

Never spun the 911, 930, 934rsr, 935, or 961 I have driven but I did once spin my 914/6 on turn 10 at summit point and somehow it never got to the grass.

I've spun plenty of 300zx, 240sx, and earlier Z cars.

I know about those. That's why I'm going to either have a upgraded IMS bearing retrofited or get one with a newer engine. IMS retrofitting will cost around 800 euros.

On buyin a 'dream car' or 'toy' .. anyone can get a trundle car.

If you turn your car on, does it do the same for you?
It is such an appropriate statement
..yer gonna spend a major chunk of your life driving,
may as well drive something you enjoy, yanno?

Personally .. I have always tried to have a car that made me smile when I walked out to it,
because I knew what was coming.
Fun.
If it aint fun, why do it :)

(Image removed from quote.)
440 powered project car, ran it for 18+years in brackets, drove it to work an back weather permitting,
even did a few cross country runs, and cruised a lot of places on west coast.
It was FUN.

Frank aka GE

now that's a car :aok
