I wish I'd gone on the firefighter job. Great hours, time off to work a trade job, naps at work, job security, same pay and bennies as the cop job, better Bosses, people get along better cause you have to since you have to live with each other. No negative press daily in the media. The citizens dont hate you cause your not giving them tickets or arresting them.
All this assuming there are no fires. And of course here in Chicago the trucks are always rolling cause the bambulances are always tied up with people shot, we might get 50 people shot on a weekend at night, along with all the other ailments from heart attacks to car accidents. Detroit is probably worse.
And of course theres the fires. If youv never been in one I wouldnt know how to explain it other then its the scariest thing Ive ever been around. Ive caught smoke inhalation twice trying to get to people trapped, once I was able to and once not. Fires are the one thing that scares the living hell out of me and I aint shamed to say it. Imagine what its like in Detroit where 1/2 of the population is probably running electric heaters to stay warm in winter, or candles. Both recipes for disaster.
And while 57g a year might be a lot in some parts of the country its nothing in the big cities where it might cost $350,000 to buy a house in a neighborhood where your kid is unlikely to get shot in the park playing ball. Thats mail carrier salary cops and firemen make. Think about it?
But Ive often thought how strange it is that citizens think we make to much, while risking our lives for people who think we make to much, and they have nothing to say about the clowns who misuse their tax dollars, and are always grabbing more, while taking care of their buddies who in turn are taking care of them. They are the Svengalis in all this. We, all of us, are just the serfs. I bet "they" arent getting laid off.
