Firefighters are brave men, and a class above the average person.

I don't think laying them off is morally viable.
it is not only a moral thing, it is a safety measure for civilians.

it is a job.  any firefighter can quit anytime they want and just like everywhere else, there's hundreds looking for that position.  why is it that nobody is up and screaming because those in uniform are really underpaid.  I would love to see communities tax themselves to support the soldiers at the nearest base.

issue is: many paid departments want residency of a set amount of time in that city, as well as other requirements. Many people can not afford to relocate their belongings and family to a new town/city with an income of 15 or 20 an hour and 2 mouths to feed. Don't get me wrong, I love that the fire service is picky about who hires, dont want a stranger to the town/city not knowing where they're going when your house is burning down, correct?

As for the rest of your post, I agree, the only thing I can think of to answer is this: They do not see the soldiers in action daily much they see or read in the newspaper about fire fighters.

Full-time employees         Monthly full-time payroll           Average yearly full-time wage
Firefighters       1,158                        $5,585,448                           $57,880

so you think 57k a year is good pay to run INTO the burning buildings? or to go out on a 0 degree day, and cut someone out of their wrecked car?

those guys are probably the most underpaid profession.

You need to raise your life aspirations.  The Queen Mum died a decade ago, anyway.

I do not know, CAP.  I was not posting something to make a statement that they are over paid or under paid.

but see that is the job the sign up for.  I work in a steel mill.  I make around 50k a year.  do you think it's enough to go out in 100 degree and cut slabs for hours which makes temp around you feel like you are in hell?  how about standing a few feet away while guiding a guy up in a crane to stack up a slab that weights about 20 to 25 tons knowing that if he messes up and you arent fast enough, you wont have to worry about a burial as there wont be much left to scrape off the slab and whatever cant be removed will be cremated when it goes into the furnace so rest of you can have pretty shinny steel for whatever you use?

there's a lot of people who work in a job which is dangerous.  but that's what we get paid for.  I am not saying I am a hero or deserve special treatment.  but go look at the doctors/nurses in the er.  day in and day out treat people who are sick or dying.  but you still dont go out and single them out for special treatment?  because that's their job.  which is what firefighters/police officers and such do.  that is their job and they're very well paid with exceptional benefits.  so dont say it's not enough.  I dont know of any firefighter or police officer who makes the minimum for that job.  I have known many and they always say the same thing, pay is good and hours are great.

the only one's who dont get paid enough are the volunteer firefighters.  they work for nothing, now them I do think highly of them.  not that I think anyless of the others.

Yup, they are overpaid.
And who could argue with that? All they do is sit around and eat ice cream in recliners, sleep, and have the occasional ping pong tournament.

that is their job and they're very well paid with exceptional benefits.

Exactly. These guys are practically millionares after a few years on the job and never have to worry about bills or the mortgage.
