I bought a Samsung from Newegg for $90. Don't remember but it was on sale no doubt. So far, it's holding 450GB worth of games and I can't tell a difference from my 250GB stock.

Like he mentioned, if he's on a budget than I don't see a reason to save some money on something as minor as 32 bit vs 64 bit. 4GB of RAM is still plenty fast enough, a 550 Ti is a mid-end card, it's not going to be hampered by not having 32GB of RAM  :rolleyes:. As for programs that uses 64 bit, nate167 said he only plays flight sims, and pretty much every flight sim I know runs on 32 bit systems (yes, including DCS: A10, which I have).

It's building what he needs, not what you need.  :) That's the best combo of cheap and performance (I would change the GPU, but he's getting one for free) that I could think of.

Titanic...you arent hearing us. same price for 64-bit as 32-bit... someday he will run into a 64-bit and have a 32-bit OS and be up a river without a paddle, or as Semp said hell want more RAM, which 32-bit limits as well. If I'm getting more for my money at the same price, I dont see a debatable issue in whether I should buy it or not....

I just did a quick search on Google shopping and there is a price difference. It varied from the lowest ($10) to the highest ($50).

Alright, I hear what you're saying now, $10 ain't much, but I wasn't totally wrong either since there WAS a price difference. But then again, what would you need more than 4GB of RAM for?  :headscratch: For games that is, i don't think Nate is going to use a bunch of RAM intensive program, is he? 4GB seems plenty enough for a casual gamer.

here's from newegg.  both are at 99 bucks, have yet to see them at different prices.  notice all the packages have the same price also for both 32 and 64 bit.

edit:  titanic you dont understand how 32 bit works do you?  if his video card has 1 gig of ram then he can only use 3 gigs of the regular ram.  if he adds anything else that has its own ram then physical ram goes lower even more.  in a 32 bit the total amount of ram is limited to 4 gigs, so most likely his physical ram is around 2.5 or so.  it does make a difference in games like aces high.

There's absolutely no reason to stick with a 32-bit OS in 2012. Getting 32-bit is a bit like getting a C-cassette player for your next music purchase. It's questionable quality and there's only so much you can do with it in the future.

Win7 x64 has excellent support for 32-bit applications such as AH2 so there's no reason not to go x64. If cost worries you, one might consider getting Win8 release preview - everyone who installs the preview will get a $40 upgrade to full version in 2013. From my limited testing, AH2 seems to work well in Win8.

I have the TA 770 A2 + SE could I use 64 bit?

I need more RAM bad...Blender keeps crashing when I get over 1 million verts and its driving me nuts :bhead

Not sure if the Windows7 Compatibility Center has the answers, but it's a good starting point. You might also like to download and install their Upgrade Advisor.

The big difference with W7-64 is the memory handler which will help Blender in a big way. Not sure what you are using Blender for that you need a million verts but that will help. There are other solutions of course.

a couple thoughts
-dont buy anything slower than an i3 CPU. Forget the AMD (unless the FX-8k series are cheaper than the i5, also you arent worried about a 135W TDP - much better/more expensive PSU is needed)
-RAM is super cheap nowadays, dont try to save money on that. 8GB ddr3-1600 will be enough for almost anything.
-do not buy a 32-bit windows.
-Zack's 550ti is a lower-mid end card, enough for AH, but you wont be able to run the newest games maxed out. Not an inpotent card, but i wouldnt buy it (unless he sells it at a very friendly price)

everything I do ends up with over a million verts...if I stay around 1 million it works OK...but as soon as I go to another multi res level it becomes a slide show and wont allow me to create a normal map (or much of anything else for that matter) :bhead :bhead :bhead

doing stuff like this...
 




 thanx I have windows 7 32 bit...thinking about going to the 64 for the RAM...I really need to.
