Problem
« on: July 24, 2012, 11:55:53 PM »
Truck won't disengage from 4wd low. I tried everything to get it out and nothing  :cry.

I was being nice pulling a friend out a ditch and now I'm stuck doing like 45mph at 4800rpm.  :cry

A couple months back my transmission had a pin that fell out of place and kept it from switching gears, I'm definately not a mechanic but something similar might have happened when you pulled your friend out.

You may try backing up a short distance to see if it will disengage.

if not.....

If I remember right you have an explorer. I think there is a motor that engages and disengages the front end. You may hear it when pressing the switch. If not you may have a short or that motor is bad/stuck.

You need to be on flat ground and at a complete stop.   If it will not go into Neutral and then to 2wd.....you grenaded the Transfer Case.    Also, I wouldn't drive with that in 4wd Low very long, your transmission will be next.

I have a 96 blazer that was stuck in 4wd when I bought it, it ended up being the solenoid down on the transfercase, salt and road crap gets down in there and corrodes it.  I have heard of them getting stuck in low range mine just happened to be in hi range.  from what people have told me it could also be a vaccum line thats broken.  is it push button, or a stick?

J0, you don't want to be driving in 4WD Low at those speeds, and especially not for any length of time.

Yea, I know...good thing I live on 25mph roads.

But I went underneath my truck just now and notice this was packed with hardened mud. I took a hose and screw driving got all the mud out and it's working fine.

Must be one helluva truck if a little mud prevents it from working
