Read the news, too. Microsoft offers a tool that should help, but the instructions and procedures are too difficult to follow for an average Joe, says e.g. Mr. Hypponen from F-secure (ranked in the top 50 of IT security specialists in the world). Installed the EMET on a customer's laptop with IE only, looked at the instructions and uninstalled, installed Firefox as default instead.

For those who want more information of the subject: A short ZDNet article with comments and Microsoft's article about EMET

 :rofl

A browser is one of the most important part of a system and they can't stop it being fetled :)

My PC switched itself on three times in the night and my wireless keyboard went mad, I wonder if I was being probed? :)

There was also some unidentified devices in my device manager :rofl

Not totally: Even if you're using another browser than IE you should keep IE fully patched. Why, if you're not going to use it? Because IE affects to Windows' networking components. IE is behind Messenger and other Live thingies, and I guess it also works with Windows Update. It can't be fully uninstalled.

So, if you're not going to use it, put the security settings on High. Tips for safer browser settings are i.e. on this Cert site. For a browser that is not in use the rules can be set even tighter.

If your PC is switching itself on at night shouldn't you turn off "Wake on LAN" in your BIOS?

just a question, how can i put the security settings on high if I dont use it or have it installed?
