You tell us 'what about them being pests'?
Pests need controlling. Sometimes by culling, sometimes through chemically castrating. Occasionally by disease introduction such as the disgrace that is mixamatosis.
The issue is whether it should be a fun pastime to kill them, or just a necessary evil?
I am a hunt.
I enjoy hunting for getting outdoors and getting meat on the table for the family. Not only is it cheap meat it's also extremely healthy and tasty. I hunt deer, goats, hare (aka jack rabbits in the US), and rabbits. I will kill possums outright not for meat but because they are a major pest here.
I do not take trophies.
I do not take pleasure in killing animals. In killing them I aim for a quick clean death, preferably a head/neck/or HILAR shot all of which provide the best meat recovery.
If I do not hunt, then the above animals will most likely be subject to control via a number of poisons. The most common of which is 1080. For some game 1080 poisoning is drawn out and extremely painful death. Deer carcasses will often show signs of severe thrashing and animals trying to disembowel themselves. And of course the meat is unrecoverable.
I gut, and dress my own meat. Which is far more than you probably do hunting the supermarket isles
