One of the most common misconceptions that Americans think they know about the Continental Congress is that English was 1 vote more than German (Deutsch) as the official language for the United States.

No vote was ever taken for an official language.

How would have history for America been rewritten if German was an official language for America?
This chapter has ended?

I think if German was the primary language for America the whole world would be under One Ruler, Hitler's son or grandson. What side you think the US would have taken in WW2?? Lol

English is practically German with a little Latin vocabulary thrown in for some flair anyway.
Now Russian... that's a different animal.
I took 4 years of German and high school but my University offers Russian classes (and practically every other Slavic language) so I had to give that a shot. What a nightmare it is learning a language with so little relation to English, coming from German.

Try french.. The Normans had more influence than then English would like to admit.

German and English have many many cognates, but its grammatical structures are different esp around the placement of verbs in the past tense and compound sentences.

All in all old Swedish and Old English have more in common than one might expect... then again Swedish and German are similar... Although I don't know if German has a phrase like ...

pappskalle or Apskalle!

The Normans were not much French at the time of William the Conqueror. At that time they were second and third generation Vikings who held a rather uneasy peace with the French king, who Rollo forced into accepting his autonomous "principality" of Normandy. If not he would burn down Paris... again. They would bring their bastardized language to the British isles; a language created by adopting the local oïl language by the Norse-speaking ruling class, and developed into the regional language which survives today in Normandy. English is very much the bastard language of Europe.
