English is practically German with a little Latin vocabulary thrown in for some flair anyway.
Try french.. The Normans had more influence than then English would like to admit.
German and English have many many cognates, but its grammatical structures are different esp around the placement of verbs in the past tense and compound sentences.
All in all old Swedish and Old English have more in common than one might expect... then again Swedish and German are similar... Although I don't know if German has a phrase like ...
