A lot of states including mine have passed 'castle laws' to protect people inside their own homes.  Basically no matter what happens you don't get prosecuted so long as you call the cops once you're done shooting.  Unfortunately you can be taken to civil court for damages.  According to the officer who certified my permit "just remember, the last thing you want is someone you put in a wheelchair sewing you."

You should suggest your council look into it.

Once the United States became a world player, I think our 'special relationship' with Britain (which arguably may not have developed once our common language is removed) determined, or at least strongly influenced, a lot of our influences on that stage... it's not at all difficult to imagine that the world may be a much different place today given the reversal of some of our decisions in that field.

First theory on new American history if German was official language.

The War of 1812 never would've happened.  I believe Early American diplomacy with France and the combined might of Germany/Austria due to common language would've kept England from starting a two front war to reclaim the Colonies.  England was strong but not strong to wage war 3000 miles away over a vast territorial expanse plus be open from coastal attack by both French and German forces seeking to help a new developing free republic.

The Executive Mansion would've not be burned from British forces causing a reconstruction of the building with a fresh coat of white paint.  We would still be referring to the building today only as the Executive Mansion and not the White House.

It would have been written in German.  That's how it would have been "re-written".  In German, if that was the language in use instead of English.

Two issues with this being that Prussia and Austria were both allied against Napoleon at this point in time and that neither Austria nor Prussia nor any of the German States that France was holding as puppets had a significant navy to my knowledge. Prussia was also still not quite the power that would later in the century be able to wrest hegemony from Austria yet.
Beyond all that I don't think that the US would've been able to build a relationship with the German speaking world by that point in time and we would have had to have chosen a side in the competition between Prussia and Austria instead of expecting help from the whole of Germany.

The fact that the founding fathers of America were if British stock, more importantly middleclass stock cannot be underestimated in its importance.
The colonials were still English in culture and outlook, to make a jump to German,Spanish or a French outlook was not going to happen, there was still suspicion by the colonials of their foreign ways.

In the end trade sealed the links between the British and the upperty colonials.

When I was in Fort Verde in Arizona I was surprised how British looking the blue coats uniform looked, English bulldog sidearms and all.

America became the most industrialised country in the world, those blue bloods in New England never left they just kept their heads down.

The Dutch also have a strong link with the British ruling classes and America.

They will not just be attacked if they break into my home while I'm there, they will be absolutely dead!  If ya wound them they can still sue you for damages in civil court.  The old saying holds true... Dead me tell no tales.  I'd much rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6!
