Looking for a LGA 775 CPU

Used, new, whichever, I won't mind. Looking for something faster than my Core2Duo E7500 2.93Ghz. Brand new LGA 775 costs are insanely high on the web and I'm hoping someone can sell me one for a cheap price?

Unless you can find a core2quad near 3GHz or there were some early i7s for the socket, you wouldnt really notice any speed difference imo.

Yea, unfortunately, almost all quad cores I looked at are going for 300$+, and with a shared PC in the household, It's a Dell as well so I can't buy a new mobo and a lga 1155 CPU.

I was going to say that CPU you have will overclock really well.  Then you said it was a Dell.  I assume Dell has no tools for that in their BIOS.

I actually found a site that showed how to overclock it through software but then I'm rather hesitant about it. It can be done, its just that my CPU already runs at 60C at full load, sometimes 65C. If I overclock it, I fear it will get too hot. I'm not home right now, but I have the site bookmarked at home, I'll post it later.

Oh no, you would need an aftermarket cooler for sure.  The one Dell provides is designed to be quiet, and eschews cooling for that.

Yea, it doesn't even have a fan, it's just a metal block. Only fan in my PC is a 120mm front fan and the GPU fan if you count that.

When I get home I can look at my collection... I have 2 775 socket CPUs and a fan to go with it.

According to the manual, all LGA 775s. Spikes just sent me his used Q9950, if it works, I'll send him the money the afterwards. If it doesn't,thanks for the find gyrene.

check the bios history for that system on dell's website. sometimes if there is a limitation or a fix for one, you can find the info in the notes.

Best solution for a dell?

Get a new case, cheap. $20.00

Get a new motherboard, cheap. $45.00

Move the parts over. Overclock. Enjoy.

As mentioned may need a better cooler for CPU if you overclock but those are plentiful these days.

Don't you have to do a fresh re install of everything if you switch mobo? I have over 2TB of stuff in my Dell. Rather not have to reinstall everything or wait an entire day to move it all.

Yes you would have to reinstall because of the hardware change. It is a pain but fresh formats make for a happy and fast computer. Also it shipped yesterday priority mail.

When I have had to do this, I just bought another disk drive and installed a fresh copy of the OS on it, then make the original boot disc a secondary disk.
