Looking for a few hours in the TA with a 38 expert

Howdy,

This month I want to try to focus on flying the P38 (I think I like the J because of a favorite skin but will try the others a bit too) mostly in a fighter role but would also like to pick up dive bombing tips and bomber interception tips.

I've been flying the 109g14 and K4 for a while now and am decent at them. I rarely land more than 2 or 3 kills (I did 5 one night in the k4).

Anyways, I was hoping to pick up an hour or two in the TA with a 38 ace/expert and maybe read any feedback/advise others may be willing to share here. I was hoping to catch Soulyss or Delerium on but I havent seen their Icons on lately when I've been sneaking away to play fighter pilot. I am CENTRAL time zone and the best time for me is after 3:00pm Tuesdays. I am a college student and work full time but if your schedule differs I am happy to accommodate it so long as I don't have an exam to prepare for.

I've had a few good runs on the 38 so far; shot down some bombers, won a dogfight against another 38, landed about 5 sourties now with 2 to 3 kills, and only augered twice 

I've trolled the forums and read that the corner speed for a 38 is somewhere just over 200 (around 210 or 230) but I have been trying to BnZ and keep my E up, just like to know what others think so I can stay near that speed if I have to defend against a shot.

Your actual corner speed varies, mostly by your weight. Your best sustained turn speed is around 200 and corner speed (best instantaneous turn speed) is around 300.  These are the easy to remember ballpark figures. They will be lower as you burn off your fuel. Keep in mind that for a sustained turn if you can't pull at least 2.5 Gs you are probably too slow and for corner speed if you aren't on the edge of blacking out then you aren't getting your best turn.

Good point FLS, didn't consider that. 

I,ve been trying to stick to a drop tank and 50% internal fuel load out so I can drop the extra weight and be resenably agile for combat. After my tests this week I'll try to do some "testing" in the TA and see if I can observe a ruff estimate for 50% internal and maybe see if there's an obvious observable down trend as the bird gets lighter.

You can approximate your corner speed by multiplying your current indicated stall speed, the white line on the air speed gauge, times the square root of the 6G blackout limit, 2.45.  So if you stall at 112 your corner speed is 275.

All you need to look for in testing is the differences in straight and level stall speeds at different weights.

You can also look at the G load on your accelerometer to see how weight is affecting your turn by looking at the max G available at a fixed speed like 200 MPH indicated. This shows you the difference in accelerated stalls instead of the straight and level power off stall. In both cases you're seeing how increased weight requires increased lift which comes from increased speed when your angle of attack remains constant. Your AOA is constant because you are at your max lift coefficient which occurs at the same AOA regardless of speed. Just check the gauge while turning but be sure to keep your nose on the horizon so you aren't climbing or descending while you turn. Listen for the stall horn because the horn is your max lift AOA indicator.

I've messaged soulyss before, he seems like a genuine gent. I admire people who are good at putting the right words towards their actions, it is as much of an art as flying at times.

I might take you up on that offer sometime Traveler. I almost always fly rooks with my squadies but I can play knights for a bit to make more friends. Always enjoy flying with others that can work as a team

Hi Owlblink, I've never thought I was any good at explaining things but I'm happy to try.  Haven't been flying much during the week lately, the AH time I had was pretty much eaten up on Saturdays flying the scenario.  The past Saturday was actually the final frame so I should be around more often, I probably spend the most time on knights but hop around and fly the other sides from time to time and happy to hop over and wing up a bit.  You can also look on vox channel 138, that's sort of the unofficial hang out for 38 dweebs.
