Thing that kills me about that is, it blew and buddy just steps out completely unconcerned.  Maybe he's just not prone to freaking out, but I think it's more likely he's part of the large portion of the populace that just doesn't realize how close they come to death or dismemberment until it actually happens.

I'm thinking his feet aren't, by far, the only part of him too small and narrow - although in this single case he's da!@ lucky they are.

Aye Cap .. was in the stagin lanes during time trials at LACR one fine day..
..guy stages his big block 55 chebby .. 12" slicks, saw the deep pan, announcer said it was a 454 ..
...did a nice wheelstand comin off the line ..he hit second, the car turned sharp right into the guardraill and flipped over.

Apparantly he had his seat harness poorly mounted ..he came loose and broke his neck, dead on the scene.
Car did the sharp right because he sheared an axle.

-Frank

dude in the stang i mentioned blew something through the side of the block up top end. oil on slicks, car rolled, threw the dude out, then rolled over him. same end result as you said though......dude was dead on the scene. all for one single shortcut.

the engine/trans are mounted sideways, but that doesn't mean that the clutch still can't explode.
right I didnt think that there was much you could do for protection

well, admittedly, when you're talking about those, their version of "high horsepower" is probably upwards of 125 or so........ :noid :bolt:

286hp actually and a redline of 6900.

It doesn't take huge hp to grenade a flywheel.

If you get the friction surface red hot from room temperature in 2 seconds, the flywheel is hugely stressed because the friction surface is expanding while the rest isn't yet.

Couple that with high rpms and you have trouble.

Well, technically speaking the clutch doesn't really "explode". It just comes apart and the fragments get scattered........ But there isn't really an explosion......  :bolt:

CAP,

I have an 07 Acura TL type S manual since new - I don't do anything to it, but this video scares the F out of me. Does my car have anything built into it to prevent this or is a SS something that needs to be added on?

There has to be some sort of scatter sheild available for front drivers, they drag race them so it must be manditory.  I'd check the honda forums for race setups etc.,you're surely to find something that will place your mind at ease.

IIRC,the transfer case is on the drivers side of the car so it would still be capable of sending sharpnel into the divers side.

I know of a fellow who almost lost his right arm to a clutch, that incedent started most guys to install scatter shields, but like hajo said most were some type of homemade thing as they just werent readily available back then.

i'm not much into tuners......but considering that some of them can make decent power till they pop, i'd imagine they have to have something.
i seem to recall there being a transmission blanket for automatic transmissions back in the day. i'd imagine they've got something like that available for the tuner crowd.

You're ok.  What is "built" into your car is the really that it isn't a massive horsepower monster that has been built as such aftermarket.  The engineers of the car likely  considered these things when they designed it.  What you saw was someone modifying a car far beyond its original specifications, which along with performance modifications, might, or should require safety modifications as well.
