« on: January 05, 2013, 08:34:13 PM »
I've been looking for one thats a little under $700 but have had no luck besides the CMP website I just got back from a gun show and saw only 5 there one was 625 but a little rough another was 875 but a little to rich for my blood and 2 were 1500 each with the last one being 1250 with a bayonet and a whole lot of other things that the 1500 dollar ones did not have and I don't feel like getting ripped off right now oh and any deals on a M1 Carbine would be good to lol last ones I saw where in the 750 range lol

You really won't do much better than CMP, unless you just stumble across a deal. And you really need to know what you are looking for, as well as what you are looking at. A book or two, and some guages should go with you to every place you go looking ofr a rifle.

$107 with bayonet sling 4 ammo poaches european take down kit with cleaning oil its dated 1940 on the reciever with all the russian hallmarks and stuff

I love to shoot this gun anytime I can its very inexpensive as far as big rifles go about $5 a box for 20 rounds course I'm using the CHEAP rounds so everytime I shoot got to clean it because it will cause a little rust on the crown of the barrel

Here's an unconventional suggestion:  Find a high serial numbered M1 with the worst barrel you've ever seen: Throat erosion is way off spec, pitting up and down the bore, crown all buggered to hell, BUT, the stock, receiver, and trigger group are fine.  Point out that the barrel is crap and offer $400.  Then send it to Fulton Armory and have them install a new barrel for $300.

I can personally recommend Fulton Armory.  It make take 2-3 months, but they do great work.

EDIT:  It looks like they're swamped with orders right now, and the website is down.  If you don't feel like waiting for all this hooplah to simmer down, try ordering a barrel from Sarco and get a qualified local gunsmith to install it.

If the rifle (M1) is a genuine Springfield Armory built gun then you can get them to install a new GI barrel for well under $300. If you want to convert to .308/7.62 it is only a couple bucks more for the mag well insert. Turn around time less than 3 weeks, door to door.

Quite likely to have been using ammunition with soft primers. Commonly gives slam fires in a Garand. Mil spec primers are fairly hard.

no offense but I had an SKS and sold it because it was a crap gun couldn't hit anything with it past 100yds and I have a an AK which shoots the same round as an SKS 7.62X39 and I can actually hit paper with it open sights out to 250-300yds no problem

Lots of US military service men that trained on the M1, Hence the reason they only want the M1.  My dad is one of them that joined the Marines in the mid 50's, he has the money to buy one, but can't understand why they want so much for an old M1.  Think they threatened to charge him $19 if he lost his rifle.

You pretty much answeres your own question. Lots of people want them and theres not a huge surpluss. Somewhat the oposite of a moisin nagant. With a nagant you have a huge surpluss with a lesser demand.
