You pretty much answeres your own question. Lots of people want them and theres not a huge surpluss. Somewhat the oposite of a moisin nagant. With a nagant you have a huge surpluss with a lesser demand.

There would be a rather large surplus if they ever let the South Korean Garands back into the U.S. asd they said they would, as there are several thousand of them.

thats the same excuse pilots give when they cant shoot down anything...'dang planes no good'   :rock

and i have 2 M1s. a numbers matching late 44, and a Korea rebarrel early 45.

no offense but I had an SKS and sold it because it was a crap gun couldn't hit anything with it past 100yds and I have a an AK which shoots the same round as an SKS 7.62X39 and I can actually hit paper with it open sights out to 250-300yds no problem

I shoot once a week usually and can consistently hit a target at 500yds with my springfield 03-A3 1943 model with open sights

Sounds like you had a shot-out barrel. I have quite a few SKSs and all of them are far more accurate than the AK patterns I have owned. However, they are definitely not a substitute for an M1 Garand (I have one of those as well). SKSs are a bit more rugged than the Garand (At least my SKSs have held up in worse weather/mud/muck than my Garand) with cheaper ammo. But the M1 is an M1, and it's definitely more accurate with a powerful round. I say buy both.

Much like the vaunted claim of the airforce bombers. They claim 100% accuracy as every single bomb ever dropped by them struck the earth. If the target are huge the claim ain't such a big deal.  :P
