The Rift is very cool and I've been watching it very closely.
I've been using VR with AH for around 7 or 8 years now. First with an Emagin Z800 and second with a Vuzix 1200VR. The Vuzix unit is pretty meh, the Z800 was awesome (Z800 is used a lot by the US military). Both units allow me to play with 3D Stereoscopic views and headtracking (pitch, roll and yaw).
You can see some examples:

I think some of my Z800 parts made it into the prototype Rift - which is quite cool.
On the Rift their are some caveats:
- effective resolution is at the moment 640x800 (dev kit models, production may go higher)
- games need to support the warped screen, unlike other headsets which just work with most games. So we need to get HTC to write or integrate support
- not sure where the tracking support is at
The dev Rift kits are due to ship in April, I'm hoping they'll bump the res up by then. My fingers been hovering over the pre-order button for a while now
