 :O

I am curious to who of the HTC crew had seen this BEFORE it got posted here. :headscratch:  I'm gonna guess either Pyro or Superfly.  So here is a question that might not get answered;  HTC, will you be looking into this item should it prove successful, and make any changes necessary to use it to it's full?

I am kind of hoping that HTC is one of those who has made an order for it.  There is one game that would use it right off, and that is this one. :aok  If Aces High could FULLY support it, I'm gonna buy it. :x

About time some of these products started becoming available.  :old:

Better start saving for those. Imagine being able to tilt your head into a turn!

The ARMY has some stuff like that. The Marine Corps doesn't get flashy stuff like that so we go to the ARMY base nearby every now and then try out their "OVCOT" simulator. it's pretty neat.

The Rift is very cool and I've been watching it very closely.

I've been using VR with AH for around 7 or 8 years now. First with an Emagin Z800 and second with a Vuzix 1200VR. The Vuzix unit is pretty meh, the Z800 was awesome (Z800 is used a lot by the US military). Both units allow me to play with 3D Stereoscopic views and headtracking (pitch, roll and yaw).

You can see some examples:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITQ9HFiRY_0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niEoWearUC8

I sent my Z800 off to Palmer Lucky to see if he could repair it (blown unidentifiable resister was the result). I think some of my Z800 parts made it into the prototype Rift - which is quite cool.

On the Rift their are some caveats:
 - effective resolution is at the moment 640x800 (dev kit models, production may go higher)
 - games need to support the warped screen, unlike other headsets which just work with most games. So we need to get HTC to write or integrate support
 - not sure where the tracking support is at

The dev Rift kits are due to ship in April, I'm hoping they'll bump the res up by then. My fingers been hovering over the pre-order button for a while now :D

No need to buy Track IR, instead wait for this.

One question, use of hands? I am guessing there is no problem integrating this with the joystick though sort of a HOTAS, many actions in flight involve hitting keys on the keyboard. Would this come with gloves or something that would allow you to see what your hands are doing in the video?

No. That's a great deal more complex. There's no positional tracking at this stage either, although that will doubtless come soon.

Vulcan, do you have to fully turn your head to look behind you with your present system?

Yeah i hope that perfecting VR is the next frontier of gaming. We've had leaps in graphics, processing speed, and memory storage; now I hope the next phase is immersion. After they perfect the optics and headgear, i hope they come out with gloves to manipulate weapons, objects, and equipment in-game. The only thing that still stumps me is how they'll resolve the problem of movement through the environment. Imagine watching all of the idiots running, jumping, and crawling in place!  :rofl

Would be like playing with a Wii or Kinect. Except the technology right now is not there yet, swing the remote randomly and the computer thinks you're doing something else. The precision isn't there yet, but when it is, it's going to be amazingly fun.

The precision was already there ten years ago it's just not rippled down to affordable products yet. Unfortunately the games industry is a fickle motivator for this technology, for a while haptic joysticks were in favour but now the interest seems to have waned. You need the partnership of both developers and peripheral manufacturers. I'm sure the O.R. will cause a spurt of that.
