yada yada yada to the debate.

It strikes me this will only work with HOTAS for the simple reason that one uses the keyboard to operate certain functions such as gear, selecting weapons/ord, gear, WEP, etc. All of these would need to be programmed to stick or throttle, and then...not enough switches on HOTAS to make it work.

Once that solution is found, great future ahead. At least that is my thought.

Let me clarify, I've been using VR Headsest with Aces High for around 7 years now (both with headtracking and 3D Stereoscopic graphics).

There's no 'debate' from me, I just want to know if someones tried the various rift drivers.

this is just a company's dream.  and there has been other companies dreaming this kind of stuff for years.

semp

It's more than just a company's dream, it's a company's reality.  The Oculus Rift, while still in development, already has a number of major studios and developers onboard and there are also a number of games that already feature support for the Oculus Rift headset.  With a very low cost dev kit, a lot more studios and developers are jumping on the Oculus Rift bandwagon.

Has anyone got a Rift running with AH yet?

My Vuzix 1200VR sucks donkeys nuts - we moved house and unless it's orientated north the tracker acts like it a chimp with a case of parkinsons.

My Rift has gone to 'processing' so I'm expecting it in the next week or so.

I don't think you'll get a Rift to run on AH without any native support.

From the Oculus Rift FAQ:

"...
What are the main steps I will need to take to integrate Oculus Rift with my game?

The two main steps for integrating the Oculus Rift are:
(1) Integrate Rift motion tracking with your character’s view camera transformation, enabling looking around the world, and
(2) Implement stereoscopic 3D rendering and optical distortion adjustment that produces the correct left/right eye image on the device.
Our SDK will assist with both of these tasks, providing accelerometer and gyro data, screen size information, as well as pre-made shaders to simplify development and abstract away hardware details.
..."

You'd first need to modify the Aces High source code files as mentioned above, then recompile Aces High and include all the right Oculus Rift source code files.

I mean precisely 0 snark, it's genuine curiosity.

TrackIR works with AH.  FacetracknoIR and some of the other free head trackers apparently do too.

Why do they work?  Do the free face trackers look like TrackIR to AH?

Is the reason something like OR doesn't work because it's an inertial setup that has completely different output?

I just don't understand why something like the free head trackers work, but OR wouldn't.

No problem, Wiley.  Snark factor zero detected.   :salute

Aces High has been coded to support the TrackIR.  Naturalpoint, the makers of TrackIR, offer an SDK for game/sim developers. Read about it here.  Also, if you look at the list of games that support TrackIR, you might notice that some don't support rotation around all three axes, or movement along all the axes.  That is because different game/sim developers decided to support some subset of the various TrackIR features.  Aces High supports them all.  WTG, HTC!

I guess the free trackers mimic the TrackIR...?  Oculus Rift does not emulate the TrackIR.  Also, among other things, the Oculus Rift requires the game/sim developers to "...Implement stereoscopic 3D rendering and optical distortion adjustment that produces the correct left/right eye image on the device...", per the Oculus Rift FAQ.

The FAQ actually does answer many of the questions posed here in this thread:

There are ways to make AH work with the Rift, as it did with the Vuzix 1200VR and the Emagin Z800.

FWIW my Rift arrived today, it is quite stunning.

edit: tracking is working in AH and it is very very smooth

Way cool!   :aok

What about the 3D visual effect?  Any way to emulate built-in support?

I like Ginger Beer, my daughter brought me a six-pack of it when she visited London in May. Still have half of them left.  :aok

3D goggles would be awesome, too.

i had some serious 3d goggles once back in the 80s. bad thing about them was when i woke up i had a massive hangover that made me feel like i had been hit with a train and dragged a few miles, and there was an ugly fat chick in bed with me. she looked better with the goggles on...but i was out of everclear and mad dog 20/20 so no goggles.

everclear shots and mad dog 20/20 chaser is not a good idea in large doses...  :old:
