Most remote start systems put the key or the chip carried in the key in a place near the coil that detects the key.

There is also a "key relearn" proceedure you should try if you are getting passkey or passlock codes.

ya know one job you couldn't pay me enough money for? being a parts counter person. those people have to deal with people like me all dam day, and although i'm generally a nice guy......i get pretty ultra melontish sometimes with the parts guys.......i just had to call one of my suppliers the other day, and apologize, 'cause after i calmed down, i realized just how much of an bellybutton i was........

used to.  I just sell to shops these days.  I haven't sold to the public in 10 years or so and I don't miss it at all

To top it all off he said the battery was bad...and if I drive it away with the bad battery I could fry everything and it might cost a few thousand to get the car running again. I told him to forget the battery I'll put a spare in when I get home.  I run to the local parts store. First I have it tested with the little hand held and it says its bad...but...the guy says this has side mount posts made from steel and I wouldn't trust this read out..so I say can we pull it and test it..he says sure...the battery tested fine.  He then says lets hook it to the big machine and see what that says....tested fine.  I'm thinking law suit at this point because not only did he disconnect the remote start but cut out the wires for the door locks too.  This guy works on high end cars to boot...I figured if he can fix land rovers my GMC should be no problem.  WTF

I would take Caps advice and simply go see the GM or the Owner and talk it out civilly.  If that does not work, take the truck to a GM shop and get an estimate to fix it.  Then send a simple demand letter (you can get standard forms online) should be sent to the shop asking them to fix or compensate you for the problem they created.  If at that point, they do not take it seriously, then consider an attorney.  Just be sure to remember that while it might be $1500 issue, cases like this can cost upwards of $5000.00 in legal fees and you may or may not recoup them.  Also, while a win in court is just fine, you still have to collect.  That's the problem. 

I educated myself on the process over the past few months, and realized that in some cases, you are just spending good money to go after bad.  In the end, you might end up with a piece of paper that does not end up compensating you for the initial loss, let alone the additional costs of a suit.

next time pay with a credit card then call the credit card company and protest the service provided as you didnt authorize them changing the ignition then go to court and file a small claims court to get the money you paid to fix their screw up.

I dont have a mechanic I trust.  never seen one that didnt try to rip me off and that is sad as they can still make money the right way, but they're too lazy.
