I've never shot anyone, much less a judge or a governor.  :x

I'm looking at buying a handgun within the next month or two.  The guys I work with all have M&P 9mms.  Any suggestions?

Where I live I don't feel a need to carry.  The permit is just giving me the itch to buy a new handgun.  I'm leaning towards the governor since it can also shoot acp.

On the two occasions where I was glad to be armed, both were preceded by very normal circumstances where one would really not think he's in danger.  Neither time was I in a dark alley in the wrong part of town.  Both times things seemed to escalate very quickly and in a way I couldn't have dreamed of.  One was among "friends" at a cookout, and the other was in broad daylight in a shopping mall parking lot in fairly "safe" city.

What other pistols do you have?  To me, these guns are really just fun guns that aren't going to be as practical as others you could buy for similar money.

From a reliability standpoint the M&P's still seem to be good money spent.   A lot of the hardcore guys are sinking more money into them for upgrades to address the usually horrible trigger/average accuracy in them.  I've only put a few rounds through a buddy's M&P, but I'm seeing tons guys on the interwebs buying Apex Sear Kit's and Storm Lake barrels to upgrade what some feel S&W swung and missed on.  Overall though, they seem to be solid pistols.

Curse Glock for messing with the Gen3 series.  If you can find a good, used Gen3 Glock 17/19 I would definitely get it over almost anything else.  My Glocks have been treated pretty much like lawnmowers, and they still run and run and run.

Currently back to just shotguns.  I used to have a Ruger super blackhawk and sold it.  I've never really liked handguns because they've always seemed inaccurate to me compared to long guns.  As far as actually carrying, I'm a long way from that just because I live in a city that is pretty much devoid of violent crime aside from the rare exception.  I also spend most of my workdays in the worst areas of it and those people pretty much all know me by now.  Once in a great while someone will act hard towards me because I'm in their yard without their permission but I haven't felt intimidated by any of them yet and most will just shut up and go back inside when I tell them we have easement rights.

I've seen exactly one fight since moving here in 1999 and I can think of one shooting that we've had since then but it was so random that the gunman didn't even know why he walked into the adult bookstore and shot the clerk in the face with a 12 gauge.
If I had a gun with 3 bullets and I was locked in a room with Bin Laden, Hitler, Saddam and Zipp...  I would shoot Zipp 3 times.

That's one of those deals where ask 5 people and you'll get 6 differing opinions.

Bottom line, you need to go to a range and beg, mooch, borrow, rent... many as many different handguns as possible, till you find one that suits you.

In the semi-auto polymer style that the M&P falls into;  Glock and XD/XDm are the other big names you might consider. (I own an XDm compact .45acp and like it)  Also I believe that Sig, Ruger, Walther, Bersa, Kel-Tec and others also make polymer pistols now.  And it you don't mind a metal frame, the options go on and on and on.

There is no "one size fits all" when it comes to handguns.  Now if you REALLY want to open a can o' worms, ask which caliber is best for personal defense 9mm, .40 S&W .45acp or .357 mag.

Is there a finer .45 automatic?

As a Kimber owner, I can honestly say there is.

My fullsize has never given me any trouble, but the Ultra CDP I have must have custom ammo made for it in order to feed properly.  It's never been an extraction issue, just rounds hanging on the feed ramp.  Even though I'm a reloader and I found the process of finding a load (basically playing with cartridge length) kinda fun, it's still not what you want in a carry gun.

Colt and Springfield seem to consistently get better end user reviews in the 1911 market.  If I were to buy another off the shelf 1911, it would probably be a Colt.

They are both fine guns but the trigger pull is really heavy and affects accuracy. Every review that I have read complains about the accuracy of these guns, which in my personal experience, is mainly due to the trigger when shooting 45 through it.  When shooting shot anything past about 5 feet from you and you will most likely miss and kill an innocent bystander with a stray piece of shot / disc depending on the load that you are using.  Get a semi auto pistol and practice with it. It will make for a much better PD weapon in crowded situations.  I don't care how well you shoot or how long you have been shooting for (unless its over a few hundred rounds a month).  Adrenaline and heavy triggers = Bad shot!
They call it "common sense", then why is it so uncommon?

Had a friend that had the same issue with his Ultra CDP........His issue was stove piping.....He ditched it (it was his carry gun) and bought a USP Compact......

Even a double stack 1911 would be a better carry gun than a Judge. The Judge is a fun gun don't get me wrong but the bulk of lugging that thing over time is going to make you wish you went with something a little more slender.

Yes, several...

When it comes to 1911's I'd take less expensive Springfield or Colt over a Kimber...

and if money where no object I'd have a Wilson Combat.
