I would go with windows 7 pro 64 bit
And I prefer the corsair caha?? 120mm dual fan push/pull heatsink cooler

32gb is overkill right now in my opinion

I don't care for using those large th HDD's either to put an is on...

I suggest at least a 128gb ssd or maybe a 150 to 450 by WD velociraptor

Just some thoughts... Also a good case with great reviews regarding airflow/cooling ability

32GB comes in handy if you are using your system to transcode video, which is something everyone will be doing eventually. But then again I also avoid AMD like the plague.

The 2TB drives are my favorite right now, but only because the one 3TB I tried took the dirt nap after 30 days.

This is very helpfull, thank you for the replies. I trust this community for no-nonsense advice on PCs more than most places.

Avoid AMD? Any advice which way to look otherwise?

Chalenge, my computer has 16GB of RAM and I have yet to transcode any HD videos which used up that RAM.  The largest I have done, so far is a 4 hour video with 12 video tracks and 14 audio tracks and it fit handily within the 16GB of RAM.  There are larger projects, but I cannot see most people running into those.

Once you get passed 4GB RAM modules you start taking a pretty good performance hit due to the increased timings with the denser RAM chips.

You're probably right when it comes to most users and the majority of projects. Although, every time I added RAM or increased my GPU power the transcoding times dropped rapidly, which is what convinced me.

Wether you go Intel or Amd is your choice, bat...

I mainly used amd CPU PCs through the years... And never have had any problems

I built 2 PCs year before last... An Intel I7-2600k. And an AMD Q975 ( 3.6 ghz quadcore )

Real life day to day use... You can't tell any difference between them....

You just can save a little money going the AMD route

Mainly depends on what you use your system for outside of gaming. I do an awful lot of video transcoding these days, and now the time I spend in 3D Studio has just increased again. When it comes to Adobe (specifically Premiere Pro) the list of AMD GPUs that are supported for hardware acceleration includes only two cards, while Nvidia has a significant advantage (last count exceeded two dozen). CPUs from Intel add to the advantage by offering significant video transcoding acceleration (specific to individual CPUs). Last I heard AMD was lagging in that department.

The majority of students in my 3D Animation class (3D Studio) were using AMD, while I and a few others use Intel. For whatever reason they (AMD users) were reporting a lot of 3D Studio crashes, while I had two crashes all year. The first involved a Boolean operation where I subtracted more than 200 primitives from the body of a larger 'sculpted' primitive (I had been warned to avoid doing that), and the other crash involved changing a complex animated texture during a render. The second attempt succeeded on both operations. It's not very scientific confirmation, but it's enough for me to accept Intel as the better choice.

Thanks Chalenge, that is enlightening. While I do use vegas every now and then for hobby projects I don't think this issue will effect me. Primary use will be for gaming. I will keep my current bronze age PC for music production, surfing and all other general PC stuff. Thanks again for the reply.

AFAIR Win7 Home is limited to 16 GiB so 32 GiB do not help a lot with such an OS. Better get Win7 Pro.
Please ensure your 1866 RAM uses standard voltage of 1.5V to achieve its advertized speed and does not belong to the fancy 1.65+V club of overclocked lower speed grades.

my opinion,
32GB of memeory is overkill, I run 16 GB and do video encoding. I feel I could of done just as well with 8GB. The reason I bought 8GB more is, the memory I use went on sale. A good price and I thoguht for the long term I would buy it as memory specs seem to change with time, I wanted matching memory.

Well I bit the bullet and now have the above listed rig built and running. I did however change the HDD to a 2tb drive after the advice here and stayed with the standard windows and 16gb of memory also after the advice . Thanks for the help lads. Having decided to stay with AMD I will let you all know if I have any problems. This thing runs on eight cores, no idea if that is even usefull yet. I also went for installing ths OS on a seperate 250gb samsung SSD and the games on the back 2tb drive. So far all I can say, after playing for the last three years on a single core 4mb ram machine, is 'yeah baby'.

get a Ax850 PSU as it is made by seasonic and more reliable then the tx850 which is made by Chicony..Oh and on the 7970ghz edition its pricey i just bought a His 7950 boost clock which i OC to 1190 core and 1500 mem and it is better then a stock GHZ edition plus i am buying a second 7950 boost next week.I looked around for 7970 GHZ editions before i bought this and they are around $500 if you can even find one.I got my 7950 for $349 with 3 games free Crysis 3 Bioshock and The new far cry Blood Dragon DLC.So 2 7950s for between $600-$700 or 1 7970ghz for $500..Plus all you gotta do is flash the bios on a regular 7970 and make it a GHZ edition..

Heres the comparision of the 7950 boost vs the 7970 ghz
