Tanking
« on: April 15, 2013, 09:40:09 PM »
I use a T34/85 and hit a Panzer 7 times in various places and they bounce off. I get killed in one shot by same. Something is wrong with that don't you think.

Film? you might be hitting at long range with HVAP rounds or at poor angles. People need to see the film to check.

The reason its bouncing off is because of your angle of impact. You are not putting the rounds in the correct spot, or firing outside the range of your gun.

Yup. I do think something is wrong with that. Trouble is, it's probably not what you think it is....lol!

Short answer. No.

Long answer. Velocity, type of ammunition, angle of shell impact, location of shell impact, range to impact, thickness of enemies armor...

In AH you can not say "I have a big gun, he should have died". when it comes to tanking.  AH includes a list of tank armor and penetration values in the hanger, you should check that out, it may help.

That and the Panzer IV's glacis plate has a ridiculous LOS thickness. If you hit there, you WILL bounce. If hes angled, his 80mm drivers plate will stop most of the crap flying around.

Also, the Panzer IV F2 can kill a Panther in a few hits out to about 1600yds. I've personally done it before. I've one-shotted T-34's from the front with an M4(75) as well. Its all about shot placment. The lower hull of the T-34 is very squishy, as it is for the M4, and Panther, although the T-34 seems to be the squishiest. The reason is that the T-34 has 45mm of sloped armor, which curves around to the lower hull. As it curves, the slope decreases, so there is a point where you only have 45mm of protection.

The Panzer IV's armor, while less sloped in general, is much more angular, which means that it will give more random "wtf" moments than the T-34 will with its more uniform shape. My guess, you just had really s**t luck.
You started this thread and it was obviously about your want and desire in spite of your use of 'we' and Google.

Every tank I ever meet manages to hit that sweet spot on my tank, whatever our respective vehicles, usually from 2k away and always way before I even see him. Hence my sum total of a single gv sortie this tour in an M3. In which, to my eternal surprise, I got tagged by an enemy tank from about 2k without seeing him :bhead

I was hitting at 2.2k with AP. The fact that the ricochets were bouncing off at different angles meant I was hitting in different locations. I've studied armor and velocity charts, hence the confusion. I'll probably reply to WWhiskey's offer in the training room since that seems the most reasonable. The geometry answers seem to assume I just point and shoot but know nothing. Thanks for all the perspectives gamers.

it is do refreshing to see people explaining the "range and angle of impact" trump cards.    :aok

BTW... the T34/85mm AP round is only ahead of the M3, T34/76, M4/75, and Pzr IV F/2.  Otherwise, it takes a back seat to the M4/76 and M18, Pzr IV H, Tiger, Panther, Firefly, and Tiger II (and in that order).   :D
