My condolences.

Helicopters do not fly.

They are so ugly that the earth repels them.

Carry on  :salute

I was a crew chief on a UH-1N in the USAF for 4 years with many hours spent flying on the noisy, shaky things.

My advice to you is: NEVER FLY ON A HELICOPTER!

over and out.

I was kind of mad that I was on one of the later flights because I was pretty sure that one would've crashed before I had the chance to go up.  Even the crew chiefs were telling how they had been to Iraq, Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Afghanistan again and how they were pretty beat up.  He also told us in the event of a fire and crash stay inside until it is extinguished and to wait for the big spinny things on top to stop moving otherwise if you run out there and get chopped to pieces.

The ride was surprisingly smooth.  However it was my first time on a helicopter so I have nothing to judge it against.  Blackhawks don't seem to be as loud as Hueys either.

A smooth ride means the maintenance crew is doing their job, and have the track and balance spot on.

Hueys do have louder blades, they have that distinctive thump, thump, thump...  Some of the new composite blades are much, much quieter however.

If I trust the mechanic, and pilot... then I'm comfortable in most helicopters.   The big exception for me is Robinsons, I've worked on 22s and 44s and after seeing how they are put together, I'm iffy on riding in them.  Also just their flight characteristics make them HORRIBLE for trainers... even Frank Robinson has said he never designed them as trainers, and yet they are now the most popular trainer out there.  :uhoh

Yeah I heard that about R-XX being unforgiving.  I find the concept of piston helicopters to be a little like 2 stroke fixed wing.

I got rescued by a Hughes 500 back in 1981 and for years afterward whenever I heard a helicopter I would be filled with a feeling of relaxed happiness. It was my first helicopter ride and it was on the end of a long rope connected to the cargo hook. Like a Christmas tree.

Was in a heli-assault unit in the 60's and as a ground grunt can tell you a flight of Hueys coming into the LZ and flaring for a landing for our extraction was one of the most comforting sounds I ever heard.

Only flew in a military helicopter once. They made me carry a rifle and didn't bother to land before kicking me out. :uhoh

Before you fly in a helicopter think on this: There are lots of vintage airplane meets and lots of fixed wing warbirds out there, some going back to WW1.

When is the last time you heard of a vintage helicopter meet?  :headscratch:
